fuji xp-1 or leica m8.2 ?

Hopefully my MP lasts me a while. I plan to take it to the grave with me.
Could you invite me to your funeral (that is if I dont die before you) ?
Then Ill know where to dig.

Now that I think about it. These Leica cameras make me do crazy things...

On the serious note. m8.2 or xp1 ? xp1 is better I guess. Ill take the m8.2 any day :bang:
Maybe a fullframe nex is around the corner ?

I did send an 8 year old Canon pro "L" zoom lens in for repair. They sent it back. Too old, no longer serviced.

Wayne

At least you can send it elsewhere to get fixed, plenty of bits and pieces floating about at repair centers.

I imagine DRFs are a bit different though, there being so few of them out there by comparison. That's why I'd go for the Fuji over the M8.2.

Leica m8 for me based on image quality at low ISOs and lens compatibility in the future since you are already committed to the M Mount system. Keep your images' look consistent with the lens drawing as well.

i believe 'non service' on M8 is an urban legend, leica still repairs all M-camera body since 1954 (including digitals)

what is really crazy is that many bought the m8 over a used rd1 for the servicing...i can still get my rd1 serviced in japan...

Evidently not for much longer, though....

Still a better record than Leica and the M8. BTW, there have been multiple users on LUF who confrmed the inability to service the M8 LCD with Leica. While the XP1 has problems, based on this news I would go with it over the M8; but count on using XF lenses rather than M-Mount for fuss-free use, IMO. And check Amazon outlet for extremely good camera/lens deals - the XP1 prices have dropped a lot on the used market.

My current struggle is whether to trade my M9 for an MP and ignore the high cost/short life span risk....

How common and problematic are these LCD issues then to base your camera choice over them being serviced? I have mostly seen users complain about a smudge or something similar, which really seems a rather minor problem for photography.

There's the "coffee ring" issue... it's annoying, but doesn't make the LCD entirely useless. This issue was semi-common for the M8.

Smudges, darkening (coffee stain), totally wacked and unusable are the problems I have heard of. Mine needed the LCD replaced because of the nasty brown stain; it was quite common. The real point is not that you could live with a damaged or nonfunctional LCD, but what else may be irrepairable on the M8 ( or my M9) ?

both interest me...

2 main things...
m8.2 = use m mount lenses/ltm with adapter
fuji = auto focus

i really like the idea of both...i think i have a few years of manual focus left in these aging eyes but then i really like autofocus too.

anyone making/made this comparison/purchase?

what was it that pushed to one or the other?

just these 2 cameras...ok? i cannot afford an m9 and no other af camera interests me atm.

Fuji can do both (main things)! 🙂

I own an X100 which from what I read handles like the XP1. I bought an M8 recently and I'm so happy with it and I'm thinking of selling my X100 to buy a Canon S95/100 instead.

My biggest reason is I like true RF shooting style and equipment does play a part. I may not make better photographs but I honk I'll enjoy shooting more with the M8.

Cheers!

This is my experience as well, based on hands-on experience with XP1 and my own x100. The files from the Fuji cameras are beautiful, in my opinion better than the M8 but the user experience wasn't what I was looking for.

I was also trying to minimalise my camera system, so I stuck with the Leica as I also have a M6 and few M lenses. If I was going with the Fuji, then I'd also sell all my Leica gear. I still shoot a lot of film so that's not an option at the moment.

Sounds like you've decided on the Fuji. It's a great camera, capable of great photos but ultimately the usage is quite different.

i've owned two m8s and currently own and frequently use an x-pro. i was, with some sense of sadness, glad to get rid of my m8 both times. i absolutely love the x-pro.

if you've done any reading at all, which i'm sure you have, then you already know what sort of images you'll be expecting from the camera. and ken rockwell says the x-pro is better built and produces better images than his m9, so you know that's true. the images that come off the pro are just stupid good. it's small, light, well built, 100% ergonomically sensible, very easy to use but not in a way that makes it feel like a point-and-shoot on steroids, seeing images displayed in the evf is absolutely AWESOME, etc., etc. the only downside that i could possibly see with having a pro instead of an m8 is the range of lenses. you know what's available to you if you buy an m-mount camera, both selection and price-wise. meanwhile, there are only three lenses currently available from fuji. sure, you could get an m-mount adapter, but ehhh... i would never buy an m glass for the x-pro. cost. although i use old nikkor lenses on my x-pro and it's quite pleasurable. i've even considered by more manual nikkor lenses for the x-pro, which is funny because i never considered doing that for my nikon dslr. besides, the fuji x-mount lens selection will surely being to grow, and the ones that are offered now cover quite a nice range and are quite good to excellent in my opinion.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that, if someone just offered to give me, free of charge, either the x-pro or an m8/m8.2, i would without hesitation pick the x-pro over the leica even when considering value.

I'm a bit surprised by the servicing problems some are having with the M8. I just got mine back from Solms with a new shutter and new display glas (it's still under warranty, as I was lucky to find a demo model from a dealer). There was no indication at all that they were short on parts. What's more: in the US, Leica is currently offering a reduced CLA fee for M8s.

For me the deal-killer on the X-Pro 1 is the focussing and lens selection - the autofocussing just doesn't work well enough and the other problems (manual focussing bad, adapters problematic, only EVF for MF lenses, shaky MF zoom view that one needs to toggle and then recompose etc.) are still there. With those handling issues, it just doesn't work well enough for me.

P.S.: I'm selling my M8 as I upgraded to an M9 - but already missing the rather unique output of the M8 sensor - it's uncanny how different the rendering is with an M9. The M8 does have a beautiful signature I find.

Leica has recently been forthcoming on the fact that the LCD for certain M8s and M 8.2s is not available - they simply are not fixable. I don't know if you mean the rear LCD when you refer to "new display glass", but if you do, then perhaps yours was one that was not effected by the lack of parts.

I just sent my M8.2 to Leica for the CLA deal. I could have easily sold it and jumped into a Fuji Pro 1. But the files from the 8.2 sensor with Leica glass are distinctive. The only part Leica doesn't have is the LCD assembly. That part doesn't generally fail unless it is impacted. And if that happens, Leica will most likely offer you an upgrade deal on an M9. I plan to do a lot with the M8.2 until it fails, then jump to an M9. The Fuji feels too light, its not a rangefinder, and the files look about the same as my Canon 5DMK2. OK for jobs, but I want something different for non-commercial work.

Of course that is true if you define "generally fail" as totally dead. If you consider the brown coffee staining as a failure - which Leica does - then failure is quite likely.

If you plan on upgrading to an M9 (I guess they will offer the same deal toward an M10 or M9 Lite when the time comes), then this failure may save you money.
