FYI - Fuji body and lens sale for Feb to March

14, 23, 27, 35...

Which two to get...?

I tend toward 14/27 combo myself. It will handle around 80% of my needs.

27 being the prime lens on there all the time. For me it handles over 60-70% of the shooting either as a 40ish fov or cropping to around a 65-70ish fov.

21 for tight spaces, crop pano, crop up to 35 fov and general landscape. So it handles about 10-20% of my needs.

So where does leave in terms of the other 20%... Mid/long tele staring around 90fov, macro work and fast lenses.

If u don't normal shoot the 21fov, then the 23/35 would be the better combo for u.

Or another idea is the 27, 35 combination. This gives an all-rounder 40mm lens for most stuff in good light. The 35/1.4 gives a fast, low-light, slightly wide portrait, night-time street lens.

js, can you explain what you mean with this? I also have the 18mm and 35mm and am seriously considering picking up the 14mm. The 35 I love; the 18 I can't make up my mind, so I'd be curious to hear your thoughts!

Well, I think it is the worst Fuji lens... even vs. the Zooms. That is all. I still use it though because it's a 28mm for Fuji (a FOV I like) and it is f/2. The 14mm is supposedly more similar to the 23mm and 35mm in quality. I've never owned one though. The 35mm spoiled me, so I'm just being a little harder on the pancake style lenses.

I agree on being spoiled by the 35, too, and it's a mixed blessing to have a stellar lens set the kit benchmark. My hesitation is that the 14 equals a 21mm in full-frame terms and that's just a bit wide for me. Normally, 24mm would be my max with the 28mm my ideal.

Worst? How?
Do you mean it's the Fuji x lens that has been your least productive?

I've gotten fantastic output from this lens. One mans famine another's feast sort of thing maybe?

Flaws=Character ?

Given the price point, it's really hard no to picking up the 27mm. 40mm equivalent FOV is definitely one of my favorites, originating from using Rollei 35. Also It sounds like a good companion to my GR. I could imagine using 28mm and 40mm (eqv) for walkabouts and using my Nikkors and other XF lenses for specific tasks.

That said, and although it's pretty close focal length to the 27mm, 23mm sounds like a marvelous lens.
I remember 35/1.4 was also great when I had X-Pro1, but I have 35/2 Nikkor to cover the FOV.

It seems one vendor pulled the trigger earlier (see fujirumors). Decisions, decisions...

Has anybody tried the 55-200 yet? How does that work/feel?

I will let you know next week. Popflash started their xf sale a few days early, and I ordered the 55-200 because sometimes outdoors especially there's just a crying need for 300mm reach. it will be quite massive on the XE, but this is my go-to system now and it deserves long-reach AF.

I've never had a focal length longer than 180, and most of what I want to shoot doesn't need anything longer than 90 or 135 max (portraits and details), but there are events that scream for a lens with longer reach.

Likewise, I'll be getting the 27 shortly and I'm hoping to get the GR in the future. I think my x-e makes most sense to me as a normal-tele camera.

No way! You have the better camera in the x100s :)
Congrats on your purchase!

agree. Put it in STEALTH mode and it wins hands down. In any situation. I am so jealous of my wife having one - even if I can generally beat her with my digital M in IQ - but that is not really fair.

  • Now I WAIT for a X100m, a monochrome version. Fuji makes their own mask so making a monochrome is a simple step.

I ordered the XF 55-200.

The price after instant rebate is less than half of the price here in Europe. So lucky this sale is coming right before I go back to NYC for a family visit!

Thanks, Gary, for the HU!

Aaand Amazon had (Focus Camera) the 35mm for $399 free shipping, no tax so I fell for that just now well as 23 and 27 last night. Darn you Fuji! :D

HU Amazon prime still has the 35 for $407 with a few days of extra wait right now.

Nice catch @coelacanth, looks like you cleaned up. (And Fuji/Amazon cleaned our your credit or bank account as well.) :D

I think I'd like to get the 35 as well. However that 27mm on sale for $200 is very very tempting. I do like the "35mm" SLR equiv focal length and the tiny flatness of the lens. I may grab that one too. I have the 18mm already and it's lovely but I find the wide angle limiting since it's my only native lens at the moment.

We have until late March, but I wonder if there will be supply issues as the sale rages on. And will deals like the extra $50 off be found again?
