(I asked this question before in a thread but did not get a response so will copy it here)

On the G1 is there a setting so the finder does not automatically change the brightness, for example when I used a Sony f717 in manual it changed the brightness of the finder according to the speed and aperture I used so when I pushed the shutter button it took the picture as I saw it in the finder. When I used the LX3 one of the things I did not like was when in manual mode it showed a bright scene when you changed the settings in manual regardless of what had it set to then showed you what it was going to take after you pushed the shutter down.

I dont recall seeing anything like this on the G1 when I was using it, anyone care to go tinker?

IIRC the version 1.1 sw upgrade gives the ability to adjust EVF and LCD brightness and color.

not quite what I was talking about.

For example when I was using a Sony f717 and had it on manual and the aperture at let's say 2.8 and let's say the shutter speed at 1/100 and let's say the picture that I saw in the finder or LCD looked overexposed by several stops, if I took that picture it would be captured exactly as I saw it on the screen. If I changed to shutter speed to let's say 1/1000 then let's say the image became very dark and underexposed, again if I took the picture it would be captured as seen, an underexposed shot.

Now when I used a lx3 in manual it would always have a bright scene as the camera was showing you a preview for optimal veiwing. It would not show you by altering the image from any shutter or aperture changes. When you half pressed it would show you a preview and a EV scale but it seemed that the captured image was not always the same as the preview.

That is what I was curious about because when I was using the G1 it would always up the image brightness when going from light to dark areas even when manual mode was on. Of course it was doing that so you could see better in the dark but what does that do for image preview? You see a bright image and take the shot and the recorded image is several stops darker because the finder was just showing you something else.

I understand now. Yes, that seems to be a fundamental problem with live view cameras in general, or perhaps just the way Panasonic chose to implement live view in the G1. Although to be honest there are so many software features on the camera I can't say with certainty that there isn't a way around this behavior.

Curious, this seems to be a claimed feature of the G1 according to Panasonic's website:
Full-time Live View shows you before you shoot how the settings change the photo
The G1's Full-time Live View is revolutionary. It lets you see in the LCD how adjusting the exposure, white balance, aperture and even the shutter speed will affect the photo. This kind of super-easy live view shooting has never before been possible with a conventional digital SLR camera.

Unfortunately, Panasonic doesn't seem to have put the G1's manual online, which might have resolved this more clearly.

You can do it by turning "Shutter Speed Effect" on - it will show you the image as it captured - including DOF, I believe.

I like the LX3 method of showing a correctly exposed image in the LCD and then showing the image capture preview when you half-press the release button.

To see a preview of the image on the G1, you have to set the camera to Shutter Effect, but it's a two button operation. Press the aperture icon button and then press the Display button to turn on the Shutter Effect. Both buttons are on the back panel.
