Gallery Picks for the week ending Mon 29th November 2010

A great series shot moments apart. This one was my favorite.

A great image in many different ways. I like the fellow's averted gaze and his sideburns. Great light, exposing someone who perhaps wasn't thinking about being the subject of a photograph at just this moment.

another from Luigi.
A budding artist intensely focused on his "canvas." Not only did luiman use the strong back light as a light source, but also as a subject here, creating a bit of blank canvas suggesting how open our young artist's future might be. Great composition.

great rain, light, composition, tone, etc. I was waiting for Gene Kelly to make an appearance.

Walter Leporati
A great shot across Washington Square Park from where Andre Kertesz lived for many years. Her white skirt forms such a strong contrast, suggesting what: purity? against all the grays and blacks. Great composition.

a classic tableaux from Frank Petronio that, compositionally, suggested work of great master paintings from the renaissance. we've got one figure posed as if on a cross. we've got a madonna and child. saints and sinners. and, all stitched from separate verticals. rather amazing and dense with possible meaning.

Dick Thorton reappears in the gallery with a great shot aptly titled, with a nod to Milan Kundera, "The Unbearable Whiteness of Being."

Thank you Keith for mentioning my 'beheaded' men!

For me, this week's choice is mainly characterized by some extremely impressive portraits:

Shac - The Storyteller: So much tenderness and emotion, underlined by the smooth tones in this picture.

Tbarker13 - Kyla 5: Great light and tonality plus a charismatic model add up to an impressive portrait!

Frank Petronio - Bri. Hard light and the model's expression add up to a refreshing, provocative portrait.

Filmfan - South Carolina #2 : I like how filmfan used negative space here. The mundane background contrasts nicely with the model!
U19407I1290641695.SEQ.0.jpg

Vince Lupo - The Lineup: I love the wide spectrum of the girls' expressions, and the nicely soft light.
U17387I1290464286.SEQ.0.jpg

... and then there were still many more great pictures, out of which I picked three that impressed me most:

Luiman - Bari, Italy: A picture, organized like a theatre stage, with a lot of spatial depth, and with a great composition.
U28407I1290896124.SEQ.0.jpg

Hteasley - Lines: A beautiful abstract composition with a lot of tension.

... and last, but not least: Harrejesus - Big Brother. So full of associations - plus great colors.

it was a busy week for me, not sure I watched carefully at the gallery. Here are my colors picks:

Carlos M with 4-0814 in which I like the color and the symmetry of the fence

4-0814.jpg

Frank Petronio : his Nashville and its color and light giving a special atmosphere. The cars add a past time atmosphere, when we were young...

luiman, Centre Pompidou: I am impressed by the grid in which it seems me various people are moving in order to find their own "square"

beaubourg03.jpg

tedwhite with A plan is hatched because of the warmth coming from this photo

Potipot/Den
Den seems to be a minimalist, but his images intrigue.
