I am creating a set of rules for the gallery. However, I will post the first rule now and others as I add to the list.

Nudity is an acceptable form of art on this site. Photographs may not, however, show male or female genitalia or any acts of sex. Nudity should be presented in a tasteful manner.

maybe there should be a separate gallery for it though...I have kids by me most of the time.....

I agree with LilRedSpy, I don't have any kids, but could imagine it not being that "smart" for pics turning up on the front page of the gallery if you do have kids. As for you backalley, maybe we should have a top-secret-takes-ten-minutes just-to-log-in-with-a password-with-warning-popups-everywhere section for your pics....and now, I'm not talking about the kids ;-)

Cheers,

Meakin

OK, this was the only reason that i did not shoot nudes with my rangefinders yet - not being allowed to upload them here :) Thanks Jorge!

Well, it says no genitailia, so I don't see any problem there.
The human body has been the subject of great art since pre-history. Would you not take a child to an art museum because of nude paintings?

You'd be surprised how many people won't take kids to art exhibits that include nudity. I used to belong to a cooperative art gallery, and we would have people (including school tour groups) who would call to make sure we were nude-free before bringing in kids. People associated with other galleries, children's theaters, etc., have told me similar stories.

Schools are particularly in a bind because they can't afford to offend even one parent -- and parents who find art-gallery nudes offensive tend to be both very committed to their beliefs and very willing to stand up for them.

I agree with you Roman... Anyway I'm a too bad photographer to do some artistic nudity right now.... I still have so much to learn

I dunno, backalley, I don't see why some of your special self portraits might not appeal to some special guys. (Or special girls, for that matter). You may develop a bi-partisan following.

You do have a certain bearish charm about you, Joe.

It's beyond me how some folks get upset about nipples, but don't think twice about their kids watching violence, including murder, on TV and in video games! I wish I lived in Europe!

I used to work at a movie theatre way back when "Pulp Fiction" was first released. It was rated R, so parents would often call and ask why, to see if it was OK to bring their kids. I would tell them it had a whole lot of violence, racism, drug use, and a guy gets shot in the face.
The "concerned" parents would say, "Yea, but it doesn't have any nudity, does it?"

It seems to me that many concerned parents are concerned about the wrong things. But I wouldn't object to having a special gallery for images that the photographer feels may be R rated. People would know to stay away, or go right to it if they wanted to. There wouldn't be any surprises when showing your photos to Grandma :D

By the way, I thought Pulp Fiction was a great movie, and I sometimes "forgot" to mention the homosexual rape scene to the concerned parents. :p

There's a streak of Puritanism in the US that people, to this day, have not outgrown. Sad.

I agree that it's kind of a shame when people avoid art experiences that they might actually enjoy if they gave them a chance.

On the other hand, I have a certain sneaking admiration for people who stand up for their personal values and convictions, instead of letting mass culture dictate what to see, hear or think. Those people tend to be prickly, easily offended, and prone to make a fuss -- but as radical socialist Saul Alinsky used to say, "the agitator is the part of the washing machine that gets the clothes clean!"

I worry a bit about a kid whose parents call art galleries before taking him there to make sure there aren't any nudes in them... but not as much as I worry about a kid whose parents just dump him on the sofa with an Xbox...

That rape scene was one of the most shocking things I had ever seen upto then. :)
Until I saw Dobermann, or [i[Silence of the lambs[/i].

I'm glad my little girl grows up with plenty of nakedness around her, and with little exposure to (TV) violence. I guess that's a better way than my upbringing (lots of (TV) violence, hardly any nakedness).

The drawback of "well-developed" societies, Remy.

By the way, the most shocking scenes were for me in the Salo (the whole movie). Don't bring your kids to THAT movie - nor your grandma, nor your date.

so i take it, by the complete lack of enthusiam, that people are not interested in my special self portraits??

Before I say yes or no I'd like to know what the word "Special" means in this context
exactly ?
I mean even for me (afraid of almost nothing) there ARE limits too, you know.
:))))))))))
Best,
Bertram
