GAS hits again!

There isnot that much difference between the Version IV and III. The IV has a bit more contrast and is marginally sharper across at f2, but otherwise you be hard pressed to tell them apart. It is a bit smaller though.
The plstic hood can be made to fit, but as said before, you have to file off the tabs and then it has a very irritating habit of turning. The round, metal hood works fine and somehow "looks" right too. The Version III is a fraction shorter than the IV and the round hood does not show as much in the finder either. Looking forward to seeing your shots with it. I think that I have some stuff with the Version III on Flickr, by the way. Use tag "Leica Summicron 35mm f2.0 III" and they should pop up.
On your TTL and battery drain! Take out the batteries and check the contacts at the bottom of the battery "well". There are a couple of small, round, silver colored "spots". Run a lead pencil over them and check that they are below the surface of the bottom of the well. These are "service" contacts and serve no purpose for shooting. They are push fitted in and can "creep" up a bit and when they do, they act as a battery drain as they are not connected to the on/off switch. If you can feel them protrude, just gently push them down below the surface. You can also put a piece of electrical tape over them to stop it from happening again.
I had this problem with a couple of my TTL's, a Millenium one that would devour a set of batteries in 4-5 hours and another one that would do this intermittently. Both were cured by the "pencil" push and tape!
Enjoy your 35 Summicron!
Tom

Thanks for chiming in Tom, I did find your flickr shots, I was glad to find black and whites, I intend to use it a lot with those. By the way, I spent a lot of time in Vancouver and have family that lives there, also once drove from Vancouver to Seattle in a record 3 and a bit hours to get to a RFF meet. I only recently realized you are situated there too. Great place that China town, I have done a lot of street shooting there but unfortunately some of the content I am not at liberty to show online given my current geographic location, that said I would like to go back and photography Vancouver and Seattle better then I did before....maybe this summer. You ever have RFF meets in Vancouver? 😉

Tom, if you're still here, any idea why there seems to be a general shortage of photos posted from v2 Summicrons?

The main reason is that it was a fairly short run and a lot of them are in "collectors" sets. It also had a reputation for not being as good as the version 1 it replaced. I disagree as I have always found it more than adequate. I usually have one of them, but my last one I sold to someone local who was begging me to part with it. Oh, well I have more 35's (but I suspect that it was the first 35 I have gotten rid off in decades!),

All I hope is that this lens will have that lower contrast rendering and nice grays that I like, more yashica gsn then modern canon if you know what I mean. I think the lens should be as Tom said, more then adequate and thats good enough for me.

The Version II Summicrom 35mm is my all time favourite lens. Some people hate it for its ultra small size and little tab but I just love the way it draws - or should I saw "drew" as I was forced to sell it a while back to help fund a very disappointing journey with a very disappointing faulty M8 (actually, three M8's)

If the Version III is anything like the II, don't ever sell it!

by what I have seen everyone thinks version two and three are basically the same lens, some changes were made to version 3 in the optical cell but for the most part it renders the same with added resistance to flare.

...And if at some point you decide you want something faster, there's the new 35/1.4 Voigtlander, in single coat version for lower contrast with black and white. I'm sure you could sell your Summicron for enough to buy it.

Hey Avotius, Congratulations on the new Summicron 35/2 type 3 coming your way, but I am surprised no one is keen on the Summaron 35/2,8 in this discussion!? It is a great all round, very compact lens with loads of character. I love using mine even in lowish light:>

Why sell the 'cron? Just save some cash and you'll get to have both.

I have two 35mm and two 50mm lenses... and really like the variety! 🙂

Indeed! Actually as I am still working out the bugs of 35 and 50 mm (50 sometimes is not wide enough, 35 sometimes cuts peoples heads of features off) so I need to work on my compositions more. It was a lot easier with the Mamiya 6 and the 75mm lens as you had a square to get lots of stuff in but could crop as much as you wanted. I really do need to work on this 35mm shooting more. Hopefully this will help.

Off for coffee...
