Anyone out there have any recomendations for a good web hosting service that's inexpensive?

I need to get a site up and going, but I don't have a ton to spend. I need to be able to register my own domain name, and I will be posting some photos on it, but not tons.

Also, if they have some kind of design editor program that you can use (or if you know of one to get cheap or free) that would be great, as I'm an HTML dummy.

Thanks in advance for the info!

I'm a web developer and I generally steer clients to Dreamhost and Pair. Dreamhost is cheaper and has more features. Pair is a little more bullet proof if 100% server uptime is a priority.

Dreamhost has plans that are less than $10/month. There are lots of others but I have the most experience with these two.

I went with lunarpages over dreamhost. Cost was about the same, but I get less space on lunarpages (though I can request more). What made the difference, though, was that lunarpages offered cPanel with Fantastico. I don't mind installing vBulletin or WordPress on my own, but it sure is nice to have the ability to do so in an automated fashion with a couple of clicks.

allan,

do you find the lunarhost service easy to use? I don't think I need a ton of space to get started... Do they give you tools to design a site? I can't quite tell from looking at their page.

I use powweb.com - I think it's $8 a month, and I got a free domain when I signed up.

The user interface is nice - one-click WordPress installation, gallery programs, etc., easy to use webmail, good upload/download facility.

Chris,
The one thing I didn't mention about the reasons why I picked lunarpages is that their performance is really, really good. I used to be on simplehost, and I would consistently have thumbnails in my galleries fail to load. I had other issues with them as well, but those are a bit more subjective. But lunarpages is fast, and I've been hosting stuff like crazy on it and it's been great.

One of the fantastico tools, actually, is a web design tool. I have no tried it yet, though. It is called the "Lunarpages Webbuilder" so it's definitely something that they offer and support themselves.

I found something in their FAQ: http://desk.lunarpages.com/faq.php?categoryid=23

Allan,

Thanks for that information. That's the kind of stuff that's good to know. They do seem to have a good bit of features and the storage and bandwidth is pretty good for the money! I just need to get a site up and going pretty soon for all the wedding stuff that I seem to be doing. Be nice to have someplace for people to see my work that's a little more professional than my photo blog.
