Google just pissed me off! I host my photos on my GoogleDrive-hosted website and I just found out that Google no longer supports this. My web address and links to web pages and pictures there no longer work. That means all my images in the threads here on RFF are gone :mad::mad::mad:

Anyone any idea what to do now???

Sorry for double posting about the same in the Associations thread. My favorite W/NW thread here on RFF, with dozens of my images, now gone
 
Unfortunately, I think the only thing you can do is get a hosting account through Flickr or some such site and just go back and re-link your images as you find they are missing. :(
 
You can edit your old posts, and substitute the links with working ones. The same images might still work using the Picasa or Google+ link, or you can move them elsewhere.

As far as Google goes, that actually was one of their more reasonable actions. That Drive now only permits secure access is generally good, even though it does break some old, bad habits.
 
google does weird things like this all the time, change things that are working perfectly fine to make it worse. just look at new google maps.

i wouldn't rely on google for anything really important.

That sucks. Try Flickr. As much as I hate Yahoo. Flickr has been very solid over the years.
 
I feel your pain !

I am locked out of my two websites (hosted by NetSolutions).
Any files that I ftp to my web pages are erased. I cannot even post a message on the pages to tell my readers about this.
It's not a Google issue, but it positively sucks. I have 7 years of pages up there.
There frontline support people are $%#@#%^. I can tell they are not even reading my "help ticket".

We sink together.:mad:
 
I simply don't trust Google at all, for anything.

- Flickr.com has been much more reliable and resilient, and has better terms of service. I post my photos there and then link to them for sites like this.
- I also use DropBox, which similarly has very favorable terms of service.

When I set up my own website again, I'll likely go with SquareSpace as they seem to have a great deal of flexibility and are easier to work with than spending the time to write HTML, etc, by myself.

If so you should be able to switch over to something like Adobe Dreamweaver and FTP from that app, or just FTP directly.

As long as you didn't use any FP server extensions, it won't be a problem. If you did, you need to move rewrite, sadly FP is now over 10 years discontinued, even if someone knows about it, they are likely to be pretty useless.

No, I type my own html (in a text editor) and use a simple ftp utility to upload to my server. Been doing this forever. A simple process, works great.
Last week, even files that were up and viewable got zeroed when I added a paragraph.

My web host is being evasive about problems on their end. Going round circles we are both smart enough not to be circling. Don't know what's cooking.
I am looking for a new web host. Then I have 7 years worth of stuff to upload.

O well.... didn't mean to steal this thread. Evrybody has problems, huh!
 
Yep, it happened to weblogs.com, where I hosted in the early 2000s, and then again to mac.com where I had hosted from 2009 on. I finally bought a domain name, and can now move 101-365.com where ever I can, and the same url will always work.
 
I checked Wordpress out today ! They have an import utility that looks very comprehensive. Check them out.

Sadly, for me, they don't allow simple ftp onto their server, so I had to bail out.

Otherwise, they look credible.

I don't know what to suggest to help you get Drive to work, but can only commiserate somewhat. While I haven't been as inconvenienced as you have, I've definitely noticed that Google likes to tinker with Drive, a lot.

I use it for some image storage and also for client delivery. For the latter there have been instances where Drive has semi-worked, showing galleries, but not allowing previews or downloads of images, then days later, suddenly everything works again. Most of the time it works OK, but if a client ever needed 'mission critical' access to files, I would instead host them on my Amazon S3 account, which has been rock solid for years. The only drawback to S3 is that any file access/download is billable. While it's pretty cheap (under 10¢/GB/month), I'd be a bit reluctant to host anything on there linked to an active site such as forums or a busy website, as hundreds/thousands of hits to a large number of files, even if they're small, will add up.

But for mass archiving in the cloud, I think S3 is a great option. It's not free, but it's not expensive either, it will be around and it's 'industrial grade' in that many, many other web services and sites use S3 and other Amazon web services as their foundation.

For what you're after, I concur with others and suggest trying Flickr.

True. The new Maps is horrible.

Just remember. You are not Google's customer. You are their product.
 
:)Hey..., they must have listened. After a good night sleep, I got up, checked the thread, and my images are visible again!!:).
Don't know what happened, but I swear, yesterday they were gone. All I got was their infamous "404. That’s an error. The requested URL was not found on this server. That’s all we know." message, with all my browsers, computers and for hours on end.
Well, all's well that ends well (for as long as Google wants, I guess).

This happens to be the only solution for coherent brand for one's work. One must be vigilant about paying the annual registration fee on time. It's inexpensive too. I pay $35/year to for each domain name.

Of course they do - they are GOOGLE (which translates to "God" in their minds, it would appear). :rolleyes:
