so i have a gsn, when i wind the film advance, i dont get a thump, i just hear the gears turning inside. so im assuming it has the PAD

but heres my other problem. when i press the shutter release slowly, i hear two clicks.

the first click the shutter fires. then the second click occurs when the shutter release is pressed all the way down. im not sure what it does. but if i dont go through that second click, my film advance is stuck. until i actually go through the second click.

i also noticed when the "slow" light is on. and if i only get to the first click the shutter will stay open until i press down completely til the second click. and yes it is set to auto and not bulb.

so i was wondering if replacing the PAD would fix this problem. thanks

This definitely sounds like a POD (Pad of Death) problem. If the POD is deteriorated enough, there is not enough travel for the shutter rod to latch in the down position as it should. This is the reason for no thump when winding. The POD will also throw off the travel of the electrical contacts for the lights, possibly explaining the activity you describe.

The second click that you refer to is a small spring loaded arm that has to be depressed in order to release the winding mechanism. It is at the very bottom of the shutter button travel, so you can't wind until the shutter button is pushed enough to depress this arm. When depressed, the spring pulls it out of the way so the mechanism can rotate.

Hope this makes it a little clearer...
