If you think a 1" sensor camera cannot be used for serious photography, I would like to present Magnum photographer Matt Black's American Geography project. He used a Sony RX100 II (released in 2013 and in square crop mode no less) to make a lot of this project:
I am certainly no Matt Black, but as a retired photojournalist who shot for The Chicago Tribune, I can state for a fact that I created quite a number of published images with a Nikon 1 V2, which had a 1" sensor. My editors couldn't care less what camera gear I used to "get the shot", all they cared about is that I "got the shot".
