I take about 2 or 3 long trips a year (this time LA). Of course, I always take a camera(s). This will be first time ever taking a digital camera. I am taking a Sony A65 with a Zeiss 16-80 Zoom. This is new ground for me and frankly I am nervous about it. I will take with me a charger, extra battery and extra SD card. Oh and I will have my 64 Gig IPad for backup. Anything else? I know I might get kicked out of RFF for this heresy, but I want to give it a try. It is a fun trip mostly so......

How about a small prime along with the zoom? I like that little camera connection kit made for the iPad. Will you be taking that?

I've done that before, with a D700 and a 24-70/2.8, obviously, not lightweight but any means, but still a lot of fun.
I'd take more than one extra battery and more than one SD card... or you can buy those in LA, if you happen to need them. Other than that, you seem to have it covered.
Cheers.

Akiva,
No concerns there.
The focal length you picked is perfect for traveling.
16 which is equiv. to 24mm in film is really a good one to capture those shots that soaks in the surrounding. Needless to say that the long end is useful for isolating subjects.
Have fun in LA.

Download SnapSeed and use the iPad to post-process and upload on the move, not as a camera. Have fun.

I used snapseed with my iPad on my last two trips. Shots processed from a compact actually look good using this app. How much better would dslr shots turn out?
Snap seed is only $4.99 at the app store.
