Hello everyone.

I've started lurking this forum a few weeks ago. I'd found out about Canonets from the Popular Photography & Imaging forums, where there's a 66 page thread. After about 4 or 5 tries to find one in good working shape, I've finally got one in my hands. It's the venerable QL17 GIII. Dang, these things seem popular.

Anyway, A little more about myself, I'm 20 years old and a business major at the University of Washington studying information systems; I picked up my first camera in 2001 when I made a trip to NYC in spring to see ground zero. The camera was a Canon FTb Ql with a 50mm F1.4 and 200mm F4. From there, I got an A-1 (Which has since passed) and I've aquired an assortment of different cameras from people who found out I like to take pictures. My "workhorse" is a Canon Elan 7e with battery pack, 50mm, 28mm and 105mm macro lenses and 420ex flash. Great kit.

I've arranged to start working with a wedding photog. that I've known personally for a while. He helped me develop my first roll of film, which was some Tri-X 400. I've shot at weddings officially and unofficially before and I think it'll be a great experience to continue to do so.

There aren't too many hobbies that can potentially pull their own weight financially and I'm finding out ways to do it. Sold my first framed print today and did handsomely. Not taken with a Rangefinder (Got some XP2 in my canonet, just gotta shoot it) but I hope you all like it anyway.

Looking forward to becomming part of the group.

Glad to hear that you are still calling photography a hobby though you seem to have many opportunities ahead of you. Keep enjoying what you are doing and let the "business" part of photography happen when the time is right.

Welcome to the group.

I also worked for a wedding photographer for a number of years and then for myself. I hope you enjoy it. It was good when the clients were pleased with the pix, though it can sometimes feel a little hectic and stressful on the big day.
Doing weddings certainly can boost your finances. It helped me to pay for my hobby gear.
Good luck with it!

Welcome to the forum. So what did you do with the other 4 Canonets you had?
If you still have them offer them up here. Several people do repairs on them
in this group or need parts.

(Nice shot, BTW!) :)

Welcome. I'm new here too, being referred here from Usenet, which is far less civil, for those who know it.

You have a good camera, and the Canonet is probably going to be my second choice if I can't find the exact model I'm looking for.

We gave my dad (MHRIP) a Canonet QL 2.5 years ago and he loved it! This was a guy who shot nothing but 120 and swore he would "never go 35" but he was losing interest. He used that one until his death and said it was the best camera he ever had.

Anyway, as you will see, the camera you have may be older, but still a very useful tool. :)

Hi, and welcome! It seems odd to say that since I've only been here a few days, but as anybody who knows me will tell you, I'm not shy. I'm also not 20 anymore, but the odd thing about aging is that my mind doesn't always understand I'm not 20 anymore. Sometimes I have to look into a mirror to convince it I'm not the young buck I once was. Anybody in the audience who remembers saying "I Like Ike" will understand this, I'm sure. I was a business major, too...with dual degrees in banking/finance & economics. I'm glad to see you're interested in photography. If you also want to learn about re-sealing that Canonet, I'm happy to help you there.

They went back to their owners or stayed at the store I was going to buy them from.

And Jon, I've already read up on a couple of articles and re-sealed my camera already. I found a sheet of "foamies" at a Michaels craft store and sealed 'er up pretty good.

..now if you have some tips on adusting the meter.... I went out and got a mercury cell and the meter seems like it's overexposing a stop or two in comparison to a couple of other cameras I have with known good meters. Maybe I've got one that's been adjusted for 1.5v alkalines?

You all seem like a friendly bunch. I'll start posting my pics as soon as I get some good shots out of the Canonet.

Yea, I remember that. It was Ike's Chili House over on 15th. They closed down way back in the '90's.
Man, I feel old.

Welcome JoeyJoe

Well, before I did anything to the meter, I'd check the output of the battery. There is a specific reason I mention this, but it is based on heresay and so I am not sure it is true. Also, I like the hearing aid battery in the hollowed out shell trick personally. If you are not familiar with this, please let me know. I won't comment on foamies....
