Help choose a strap please

I'm currently using a Gordy wrist strap but I've been hearing more and more gruesome stories about lugs pulling out, cameras shattering on the floor and so on..

Now I'd like a soft, durable strap that possibly also has adjustable size. Since I'm very against having cameras dangling from your neck I'd like to shoulder it, and possibly below chest height.

Artist & Artisan straps greatly appeal to me, yet they are all 90cm and that doesn't sound very long... Does anyone have other suggestions?

(This might seem trivial, and in a way it is, but I figured why not ask here first. If a strap, why not a proper one)
 
I use a Luigi strap. I wear mine just as you'd prefer to wear one - across the chest. I sometimes sling it around to my back when not actively shooting. It's a great system. Luigi's straps are expensive due to the shockingly weak dollar vs the Euro. But his workmanship is first rate.
 
I use a Gardy's Straps, both wrist and shoulder straps --
The nice thing about Gordy's is that you can order the shoulder straps any length you like. Just use a piece of cord at home to figure out the length you need - chest height, below the arn, etc.

His straps will work as well as any other shoulder strap in regard to lug wear- they are well made, and a great price.
 
It's heresy, but my M4-P and the CLE wear nylon Nikon straps. The painted lettering rubs off easily. :angel:
I think the number is N12 or something like that and it might be obsolete by now.
The strap is black woven nylon, 12mm wide at the ends and 25mm on the shoulder, with a strip of rough-side out leather for grip. I like Domkes on my SLRs but find them too bulky on RF cameras. Around the lugs are some anonymous leather rub pads that the photo shop found in its junk drawer.

The 'cheap' Domke that ocean7 linked to appears to be very similar to what I'm using.

Nice idea too Joe. Heretic though! :)

By the way I wasn't talking about the bigger, more well know Domke straps. True these ones are too bulky for a RF, but there are some thin Domke straps. See link. The thin ones work and look great!
 
I have an old Nikon strap that is just like the new straps that come with a Bessa for free. I have it hand stitched together for about a foot on each side (will never come off). That is on my M4-P, on my Nikon S3-2000 and F2A I have a Gordy Strap. Not an issue.

To those using the Gordy shoulder straps, do you notice if the split rings ever scratches the camera? The Gordys don't appear to come with the little leather "flaps" that some strap makers use to prevent such contact.

I love my luigi strap. I've a wrist strap and a shoulder one. Both are excellent. The wrist strap just disappears.
 
If you are absolutely set on a strap longer than 900 mm, and want a good quality one with leather lug protectors that prevent the rings from contacting the top plate, then check out the A&A Neckpad Strap model. I have other A&A leather straps that I bought recently from Photo Village. Work great and the quality is amazing. Worth the extra $, and look great, too.

The loop of the strap is such that the split rings don't touch the camera.

I just take a old pair of shoes that I have used up and cut a new pair out of them. Low cost, can be done quickly and they work fine! Could use an old belt too as long as it is not too thick.

Thanks kully. The Gordy straps look like a nicely made, solid and simple product - and not overly expensive, too.

And thanks Bill for the DIY idea - as I look down at my worn loafers.... :)

Another Domke Gripper fan here. See if you can get older ones, even used ones. They are not making them like they used to...

Hi aizan,

Which straps are you talking about? Leica's or Gordy's?

Personally, I've been using both the Leica's strap (that came with the M6) and the Domke 1" strap. I much prefer the Domke as it is more supple, wraps around my wrist more comfortably, and the grippers keeps it on my shoulder better than the Leica's.

I also notice something peculiar with the Leica straps ( I have two). After a while they don't seem to lay flat. I have to occasionally pull up on the plastic thingy, even out the strap, and then reclamp the thingy again. Don't know if I'm explaining it right....
