--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am in a position to either buy a used Summilux 75mm/1.4 for $1500 or some other lens. I have been selling off items here to get the cash for the buy.

I have in 50mm lenses quite a few vintage lenses and a new Heliar 3.5 and a mintish Pentax 43mm 1.9 LTM ...etc., plus a Canon 1.2 and 1.4 and 1.5.

Would a Nokton 50/1.1 be really a useful addition for photography for me,given my lenses?

Would a Summilux 75/1.4 really be an addition helping me in photography, given that I have a Nikkor 105mm 2.5 LTM, a Summicron 90mm 2.0 and a vintage Canon 85mm 1.5 LTM?

Bear with me ...maybe I like toys, but I really use them and enjoy them.
Please don't get into "save your cash for your kids' education" as I save a lot for them now.

Thanks!

A focus on specific optical advantages of one lens over the other would help.

After years of lvinh fast lenses.
I find they are only worth the extra bulk for low light situations.
If you shoot often in low light.
Consider the FL that is best for you. In those situations.
Currently I find I could take advantage of the 1.2/35 so I'm looking for one.
If the reason to get the 75lux is speed and a little reach ho for it.
Of course it has a nice character.
The other lenses you list also do.
Buy the one that gives you what you need most often so you may use it more often.

Since 50mm seems to consistently be your favorite focal length, I'd go with the Nokton 50 1.1. The 90 Summicron covers the telephoto end with a larger image for portrait stuff than the 75. The Nokton will give you a fast modern lens with a modern look to complement your Canon 1.2 more classic look.

I'd say the 75, Raid. I think that some candle light shots of your beautiful wife & daughters would make it worth it to you.

Good luck on the decision. I'm getting Jim's IIIf & collapsible Summicron so I understand what your going through.

A tall order here, Raid.

I'm presuming you've never had a 75mm in your possession before. If I'm right, and you have the dosh for it, go for it, if for no other reason than the typical "Leica Mistake Insurance" one: if you don't like it, you'll likely get back most if not all that you paid for it in reselling; in the event you resell it for a hundred bucks or so less than what you paid for it, consider it a "rental fee."

It's hard to second-guess someone else's wants/needs (never stops one from trying here, right? 😛), but if I were you, I'd try the 75 first, and, if that doesn't do it for you, I'd go with the Nokton 50 f/1.1. People get snotty about its apparent Bokeh Deficit (herewith abbreviated BD), but if available light shooting at sub-Noctilux prices is the goal, I can't think of too much else in terms of current-production lenses right now, and paying Mr. K for something new would only "improve the breed" IMO.

Keep us in the loop as to how your quest goes.

Well my friend, I would say don't go for the 50mm lens, you have plenty of them. Get the 75mm Summilux, and if you don't like it, you can sell it back at almost no loss 😉

PS: I'm sure that You're a great dad, it shows in your portraits of your two lovely daughters how much they love their daddy 😛

Thank you, Guys.
The message is clear: do not get another 50mm lens.
The 75mm can be viewed as a loaner lens as the price of $1500 is rather low as compared with ebay prices.

I will sleep on it.

Raid,

Sorry, bad few days at work. Here are my 2cents, worth each penny that makes them up.

Option 1) You really like lenses that have a signature or look. I'd recomend the 35/1.8 Nikkor. I really think it might open up a new approach for you. Not sure how many in LTM there are but I'm sure you could find one. Hey Raid, take a walk on the wide side!

Option 2) And now for something completely different. With my memory still being fried from work I cannot remember what bodies you shoot with (metered, automatic or bare-bones) so pick up an early 105/2.5 F mount Nikkor. I know, you already have one in LTM, but open up to a different approach for long lenses. If you are into bare-bones pick up either an F with a plain prism or an F2 with a plain prism. If built in metering is for you pick up either an FTn or F2 photomic. If you’re into automatic then an FM3a and have the early 105 adjusted to work with an AI only camera (John at AI-Conversions). Part of me wants to recommend the F3 rather than an FM3a because it’s finder does not cover 100% of the frame which I think is important in an SLR, but it’s bigger and I’m not sure if it’s too big to become a part of you.

Don’t go deeper into moderate telephotos in M mount, you have it well covered. Step out into something different.

I seem to recall you being a fan of sonnars and older optics, that being said, I think the 50/1.2 should have you covered for low light at 50 while providing the look you seem to prefer.

That being said, I'd second what others have said and go with the Summilux. For one, it's a focal length you don't have and it's not quite as much as a tele as a 90mm, and not quite as 'wide' as a 50, it's a comprimise of the two, almost like a wide portrait lens. Also, if you don't like it you can always recoup what you put into it. It's also good for low light, and the bokeh is supposedly pleasant.

Raid,

I already have the Canon 50/1.4 and the Leica 75/1.4. Since getting the Leica 90/2, I am starting to think that I can let go of the 75mm Lux.

Why? I can rely on my 50/1.4 for low light stuff, and the 90/2 for portraits & situations requiring shallow DOF (the DOF of the 90mm at F2 is very similar to that of 75mm at F1.4).

The 75mm F1.4 of course can do both (low light and DOF). Very nice lens, but I think that my 50mm and 90mm lenses are good enough.

Maybe that may assist in your decision.

i love 50mm most - but since you have so many 50s i think you gain more with 35mm - with almost same speed and ability to hold it on lower shutter speed...

Dear Raid,

Inevitably, in the nature of things, I get to try a LOT of different lenses -- and I find that the ones I like are completely unpredictable. I really did not expect to fall in love with either the Thambar or the (previous version) Noctilux, for example. Or the 75 Summicron (which I bought) or the WATE (which I didn't).

I do however find that very seldom do I need more than at most two of any focal length, and often, only one: thus the 50/1.5 C-Sonnar displaced both the Canon 50/1.2 (given away) and the 50/1.5 Nokton (sold), though I can always borrow Frances's 50/2.5 Summarit and I'd buy a Noctilux if I could afford it.

Logically, then, I'd go for the 75. But equally, I might find that the 50/1.1 was exactly the 50 I wanted...

Cheers,

R.

"If it's not good enough you were not close enough" - Bruce Gilden. Get 35mm or wider cauz it sounds like you are missing some wides in you list... Good luck. It's your call anyway, nobody can help you out to decide upon anything. You should have a feeling of what you are missing, if you do not, that means you are set already! Get what you think you would like to use!
