Raid, I'll be the contrarian.
Your stuff is well centered around 50 mm, but you like to go long as well.
I am assuming you have tried, but don't care for the Hexanon lenses,or you'd have one.
I have to tell you, the medium wide length is lacking for you, and the lens which has changed my thinking the most is the Hexanon 28/2.8. You live in Forida, so especially outdoors, low light is at a minimum. For the money, I think you'd be surprised how happy you might find yourself with something like Krosya's hex 28 (no, he isn't going to give me a finder's fee), and the initial entry doesn't take you out of the 75 range if you bank it and add a little along. Meanwhile, you have a length you have added that might please you for a reasonable amount.Much cheaper than a 28 cron or cron ASPH.
I'm biased, admittedly, toward wides, since I have more than one (I got the best, a UC Hex from Mike Tuomey which I'd like to weld to my MP. But from my view, you have been handling your portraiture quite nicely, thank you very much...
So, there are my MICRO-cents.
Michael

Hi Michael,
I have never tried out a Hexanon before. Nobody ever sent me a Hexanon for one of my lens tests. Maybe such lenses are rare or simply "too precious" for their owners tolet go of them temporarily.

I like the 28mm focal length but I have two excellent 28mm lenses left after I sold here the Minolta Rokkor-M. The Kobalux 28mm 3.5 is superb and the Canon 28mm 3.5 also has a great optical performance for such a lens with relatively low market value. I am looking for something new, if you have noticed. I am always looking out for something new in my photography, and now I am ready for Leica lenses or Zeiss lenses, whichever is offered to me at a better asking price relative to current market value. I happened to have stumbled over a thread at another website where someone came to "riches". His dad bought for hardly nothing several cameras and lenses, and the two Lux's came with that set. It is a good opportunity for me to try out the two Leica lenses and then still be able to sell them without financial loss if needed.

Raid, I may be off base, but why not go the other way and get a wide such as a 21 or 18 Zeiss?

Hi Keith,

I am going the vintage route quite happily, and my Canon 19mm FL lens is wonderful. Mark was kind enough to sell it to me. I use Canon Adapter B with that lens. RF focusing is not needed. I have this lens always in the camera bag, along with a Russar 20mm finder. I don't alwaysneed a 19mm perspective, but I love it for an alternate look.

Had I found a 21mm or 18mm Zeiss lens at a super price, I may have gone that way. The asking price drives me to the lenses as I like all focal lengths from 20mm-100mm.

I also shoot pairs of lenses. My first choice of late have been the 28 and 75 Summicrons, which on my M8.2's closely replicate the 35 & 90 I used to regularly shoot with on my M6's. I recently acquired a 35 & 60 pair of f-1.2's in lieu of a Noctilux. I prefer the flexibility of both lenses. I could easily see a 75 Summilux (v2) as a compliment to the 35/1.2, especially at $1500.

Were I you I would jump on the 75 Summilux and keep my eyes open for a deal on a 35/1.2. Less than 3 weeks ago I missed out on one in the RFF classifieds and a couple of days later scored one for $135 less. The 35/1.2's are out there, but 75 Summiluxes at that price will be many fewer and much farther in between.

"Life is too short for a cheap lens."

The 35/1.2 looks enormous, and I could see myself having it and not the 75mm Smmilux, but not two very heavy lenses iat the same time. I am not using an M8, so the focal lengths of the lenses stay the same.

Which version is this 35mm Summilux:

Any of you 35mm 1.4 gurus, is this a good one or not?

35 Summilux F1.4 Type 2 ( S7 ) $ 1,350-1,550 2,221,xxx to 3,253,xxx noted

Hello Hung,

Thanks. Yes, the Version 2 lens costs somewhere there. Still, the website you refer to always has very low low prices that are never found online. There is a 35mm 1.4 right now on ebay for $1390. The other 35mm 1.4 go for over $2500. I will pay less than that if I buy this lens.

Hello Roger,
I will check out how safe the accomodations are. I would be staying at Professors' quarter at a German university there.

I am still balancing high contrast with lower contrast lenses in my "set".Both have a place in my photography.

Dear Raid,

The accommodation itself is probably pretty damn' safe. People rarely break into your room while you are sleeping.

What I worry about is (a) leaving kit behind in the room when I'm not there (I want it in my bag, beside me, wherever I am) and (b) theft on the street -- which is probably roughly constant, +/- a factor of two, in anywhere there are half-competent police.

And of course there's always the old saying, 'never gamble more than you can afford'.

Cheers,

R.

Hi Helen,
I will soon have another RFF classified ad in which I will put up for sale several items to finance the Summilux 35mm 1.4. I guess, the lens would be a Version 2, as Hung has said. Hopefully, this is a good version of this lens. I have never used a Lux except a loaner 50mm 1.4.

Hello Roger,
I will most likely travel light and will avoid to look like a tourist. I want the Graflex XLSW MF camera for details and more details, while I will have one 35mm full sized camera and as a back-up a small P&S in case I need a pocket camera or in case the full size camera has some problems. My wide angle lens will be the 47mm on the Graflex, so my 35mm lenses may be a 25/50 combo or a 19mm/50/90 combo.

I will ask for guidance over there regarding safety issues.
First of all, I have to get the offer to travel there.

Raid, that's about as good as it gets with the pre-asph lux 35, except for the late titanium pre-asph that catch a premium. I know you will use whichever lens hood you find that fits, but do bear in mind my recommendation if you encounter any flare. Best, TW.

Which 35mm is a better overall lens; the Summilux 35 1.4 or the Nokton 35 1.2? Prices are somewhat higher for the Lux.

The 35/1.7 Ultron is good enough to make me happy 🙂

But given your choices, I'd go for the Summilux.

Hello Raid,

I am not sure why you would state my site has "low low" pricing info...the last 35/1.4 S7 lux I see on ebay sold for $ 1229 USD on ebay.... thats below the 1350-1550 range I have.... see http://cgi.ebay.com/Leica-Summilux-...ries?hash=item35a328ca7e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and here is another S7 Lux with Buy it now at $ 1390 USD http://cgi.ebay.com/Leica-Summilux-M-35mm-f1-4-35-1-4-Ver-2-pre-ASPH_W0QQitemZ160359893899QQcategoryZ3323QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%252BFICS%26otn%3D10%26ps%3D63 and another that sold at $ 1081 (with cleaning + coating marks ) http://cgi.ebay.com/LEITZ-CANADA-LE...nses?hash=item41489484f0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

So, I guess those examples contradict your statement that these prices are "never found online." I am not looking for a confrontation, but I think your opinion wasnt exactly accurate in your post. By all means I respect your contributions on RFF - especially your lens tests - but please be fair and dont make sweeping statements about my website - I put a lot of time and effort in producing these pages and try to post accurate information at the time they are published.

Also, if you read my pages, I state they are weighted to ebay pricing and if you buy from a dealer or retail source, expect to pay 15 to 20% more. I must say that my guides are generally quite accurate at the time they are updated and according to completed ebay auctions...do you know of other guides that are more accurate ? The goal of my pricing pages is to give the average buyer a sense of the range they should pay for a given item on ebay. Certainly ultimate condition is vital in that equation - especially for Leica equipment. Having said that, Leica pricing moves quickly ( up and down ) these days....

Also, I have read more than once that you dont like to involve yourself in auctions but generally "buy it now" or buy from other sources. That strategy would tend to make those items more expensive than an ebay auction.

Thank you,

Dan

Hi Dan,
I am sorry for my bad choice of words in commenting on how I view your pricing. You have a statement up front in which you actually mention that mint prices are higher and you go by ebay pricing.

Needless to say that each week I frequent your website!

Yes, I prefer BUY NOW to avoid any hassles, and prices can be on the high side.

My appologies, Dan.
