Hi, all~ My M7's frame counter won't go below #15 when I open the bottom plate. Is there any way to reset it to zero manually? Thanks in advance!!

Guess nobody else is as unlucky as me... well, I'll just ignore it and get it fixed when the CLA is due, then.

I would bang it a couple of times on a table - quite hard, but hitting with the bottom plate completely parallell to the table...

Will never break anything in a proper camera, but will often loosen up jammed parts...

Next time I have a problem with the speedometer in a car I'll drive it against the wall a couple of times - quite hard, but hitting with the bumper completely parallel to the wall..

Seriously guys. It's a precision instrument, hand-built and hand-adjusted, that costs $4600 new. Are you sure you will fix anything by bumping it into tables, rather than breaking something else?

Well if the table smack doesn't work perhaps you could pry off the top plate with a can opener and try turning the counter manually, like on an M2. Or, you could send it in. I'd probably send it in.

I usually don't bang my Leicas onto the table for fixing it ... 😉

But if the M7 is similar build as the M6 (or M6TTL): After removing the bottom plate you should see a small pin at the back-side near the take up spool compartment sticking out a few mm. When this pin is pressed (by attaching the bottom plate or manually), the counter starts and when released, the counter is set to zero and doesn't count when advancing the film. Try to press the (spring-loaded) pin a couple of times. Hopefully it helps !

Cheers,

...the gear for the film counter is plastic and is know to shear. I have an M6 TTL with the same problem for the last 3 years now and just haven't gotten around to having it fixed. I cant read the damn thing without glasses anyways so Im not too concerned. I believe that DAG can fix it and replace the plastic gear with a metal one.

I recently had my MP serviced by DAG for an intermittent frame counter issue and I'm afraid to report that it can't be fixed but the frame counter unit will have to be replaced. Leica, in their infinite wisdom, had taken a mechanically perfect frame counter from the M3, M4 and M5 and simplified it, making it more prone to malfunction. I would try to have it done by Leica if still under Passport warranty to save the money. I was fortunate in that the Don could swap out my frame counter unit with the older more complex all metal M4 unit because the MP retains the exact same dimmensions as the M3, M4 and M6. Unfortunately, the M6 TTL and M7 are a slightly diffenent size and will only take the current style frame counter. Possibly playing around with the pin at the base of the camera might help as was suggested, but it's bound to act up again. Good luck in resolving this issue.

Thank you all for your info. I did play with the pin at the bottom a few times and finally got the counter back to zero. However the counter still won't reset to zero after a few dry shots... :bang: So, I guess there's no quick fix on this... Thanks again, guys.
