Well, how about this...

How many cameras do you really need?

I realize many of you can afford several and/or require them for work, however, I strongly consider getting the MP (there is none better) and selling some of the other cameras. It is a camera for a lifetime.

There is honestly no need to have more than 2 cameras. 3 maximum for a professional in the field should one fail, colour, B/W, film speed...

I own only the MP BP. Would never sell it, it is my sole workhorse. I own also a pristin Leica CL I am considering selling as it simply is not use as I thought it would be...


At any rate, consider this option. I believe you will find that nothing compares to an MP.

Keep your life free from unnecessary excesses. Concentrate on your work.


(Don't laugh..quality, craftsmanship, etc. have a premium. I am a firm believer in researching, studying , and finding the best and maintaining for a lifetime. Yet, it is important to stay clear of unnecessary loads and paths in life as all things are beautiful and interesting and it is so easy to get sidetracked.)

Don't buy an MP.

If you really need a meter (do you?) then buy an M6. If you really want the finest crafted rangefinder camera ever made, buy an M3, M2 or M4. They are what the MP is only imitating, anyway.

Don't talk rubbish! He must buy an MP and an RF645😀 Doing anything else is both foolhardy and cowardly. He should also buy an Ebony view camera....and a Berleback tripod....

Heck, I've both cameras and the RF645 does kick 35mm to bits in strict technical quality terms, but the MP really is a very different tool. There are no ultra wides for the RF645 and no fast, accurate long lenses, or fast wides. It is also much bulkier and heavier. I love both and use them differently.

I just had to have an MP also, so I found a demo that had not a single mark of use on it for (at the time) $2000. When I opened the box I found there was a slight shutter problem, so back it went for 2 weeks to be fixed on time to take it to a friend's child's wedding they asked me to do candids for. Trying to change film rapidly using the rewind knob was infuriating compared to the M4 I also had, so the MP went into the bag, switching places with the M4 as backup. So I paid $165 for a gray-market Leica rewind crank (the only one available at the time that I could find). I used the camera for almost 2 years, after which time rather than the beautiful patina of brass I had read about, I had a mass of spiderweb marks and scuffs like a black car where 2 alley cats had fought on the hood. By that time the prices had shot up $1000 on new ones, and I sold mine for $2200 with the crank. With that I bought two classic M6 bodies in "bargain" from KEH (both ebay Mint Minus), a 28/1.9 Voitlander Ultron (also KEH bargain), and a brick of new film. I am totally happy I made the change. Cameras for me are for taking pictures, and 2 working M6s and a 28mm lens and some film are more useful than one nostalgic-looking MP.

THAT, if I may, is the problem- no one on this board is ever satisfied for life.

Sometimes I get the feeling that if I ever want to be happy with the gear I have I have to unplug. Go offline. Get away from the gear fanatics and just shoot.

All I can tell you is there was life before the M- and there is life without the MP. And, generally, more money in the bank; too.

I have a 645 (SLR) and a view camera. Heck, I even have a Berlebach tripod (very nice it is too, although I've not stuck an M on it).

Well, I can recommend both the MP and the Bronica RF645. Sadly (very sadly) mine are destined for new homes along with my M6 (another fine camera). They don't make you into better photographers, but they really do make you feel good 🙂

Yup. I only got into this M business because I picked one up in a shop after readng about it on the web and went "Ooooo, this is nice".

Thin end of a slippery wedge.
