Given the all the much appreciated feedback to the other thread requesting general thoughts on the AF, I wanted to further take advantage of all the knowledge out there to see if someone could explain to me how the various modes work with flash. I read the manual and it is less than useful.
Thank you!

I used a few time dedicated flash that comed with camera and I was just following what is written on the back of the flash. All fine, was happy with result.

The richard caruna review has a useful summary.
There's also a Dutch chap did a great users' guide - unfortunately my MacBook hard drive died and I no longer have a copy. Hopefully someone else here will?
I do find P mode better than A - A often requires pretty long exposures, which can give whacky effects but is not that reliable.

Perfect. Thanks, Paul (and Vobluda)!
As a follow-up question, and understanding that the HX14 is already a very compact flash unit, is there anything even smaller that can be used with the Hexar?

I wish I knew. MIne died, I did some research and bought the Nikon SB15 but would love something even more compact. So I will be watching this thread. And if anyone would like to part with an HX14...

Almost forget, even better is flash that comes with Hexar RF. Also following what is written on the back of it.

Take a look at these links; I also have a very useful manual (pdf.) from Frank van de Wiel, let me know where I've - if needed - to send to.
