Hexar AF Journal

Had some free time over these holidays.

Glad to see appreciation for the Hexar AF in another recent post. I was certainly appreciative of the Hexar's talents when taking these photos with one hand, while holding a cup of coffee in the other on my walk. Don't think I could've done that with too many other cameras in the Hexar's class for image quality.

Nice to see so many recent threads on the Hexar AF - This camera is still alive and going strong.

These are just drugstore scans with a bit of tweaking in either ACDSee or Capture NX2. Luckily in Toronto, we have access to $2.99/roll processing and scan to CD. I'll rescan anything good with a Coolscan V to higher resolution.
I asked the guy at CVS the other day how to get higher res scans, and he said "Just ask." No charge!

I'm a Torontonian myself and a Hexar owner. Where are you getting your photos processed? $2.99 with a CD is great! I usually go to West Camera on Queen but they are considerably more pricey ...

Shopper's Drug Mart. The one at Yonge/King is conveniently located downtown right at King subway station.

I got a great deal on an Olympus XZ-1 and decided to pick it up as a backup companion to the Hexar. I think this is a very nice pair of cameras to pack around with the Hexar as the main body and the XZ-1 for those times when a bit more flexibility is required without committing to carrying around a DSLR. The Hexar + XZ-1 is still a lot lighter and portable than taking my D700+35.

I had the XZ-1 "upgraded" with the self closing lens cap and a grip - I would highly recommend both of these accessories for those with an XZ-1. Image quality is superb for such a compact camera.

Of course the Hexar will remain my main camera!

Md: youve got a good eye. But stick to B&W! Much more powerful images.

I LOVE my Hexar AF. Its my indoor camera. HP5 @ 800 iso, aperture at f2, shoot away.

From another trip to the ROM:

Lots of different light conditions at the ROM, from spotlight bright to dark corners. I just happened to see the tour guide resting here while passing by - no way I would have been able to change the exposure and adjust focus on my old M6 to get this shot, especially since I had my 17mo daughter to keep an eye on as well. Definitely a Hexar moment.

Hopefully, by the time the pool of functioning Hexars die out we'll have a real digital replacement for the Hexar with film like rendering. We're getting close - think X100 with full frame XPro sensor, near instantaneous AF or the Hexar AF system, and a viable manual focus system although not a big deal if AF works well. Add a rugged weather sealed body in M form factor and I think I'd be set for the rest of my picture taking days...
