I was just taking some photos at a party, and I was having problems with my AF lock. Originally I seem to only notice the problem when I pre-focused well in advance to wait for "the moment", and when I fire the shutter, the framelines shifts back, but I don't hear the shutter and a check of the frame count confirms that no photo was taken.

I assumed it was because it won't focus lock for that long. But then it started to feel like it refuses to take a photo even when I take the photo almost right after it focused, usually when I shift the AF point off centre, but sometimes even when it's not.

What I want to know is, is this common with all Hexar AFs or is mine faulty and needs to be fixed?

Dirty shutter release button. Happens to all Hexara AFs somewhere down the line. You're in good company here 🙂

There were several threads on here to diagnose and remedy the problem, its a simple straightforward procedure. You can search Hexar AF threads here and find the link to the Silvergrain wiki, which has a pictorial on how to do it. Or go to the Silverwiki right away.

Hi Kevin - I have had a similar issue and I recall that I thought it was probably dust under the shutter button or something preventing electrical contact. However, it turned out that I had set the low light minimum shutter speed at 1/30th sec in P Mode, and this prevents the camera from taking the shot when light was too low. Try resetting your low light speed to a slower one and see if that helps...
good luck,

thanks guys! I didn't see the red negative sign when I had trouble taking photos so I am guessing it is that dirty shutter button. I looked at the Silvergrain article and judging about how inexperienced and clumsy I am, I think I should leave it to a professional, that is if I can find someone to do it...
