I watched some of the replay of the Germany v Poland game this morning at 2:30 am. What a relentless attack by the German side. Beautiful to watch, the skills shown were amazing.

Rover, what's a power play? It's not a term used in football so far as I am aware.
On a more general note, I maintain that our (and by which I mean England) biggest mistake re footie was to teach foreigners to play the game!
The first unofficial world cup (sometime in the '20s) was won by Bishop Auckland Working Mens' Club (Bishop Auckland being a small town in County Durham). They beat Juventus, twice. After the first defeat the Juventus players collectively spat the dummy and demanded a rematch. the Working Mens Club team duly obliged and beat them again. But sadly the genie was out of the bottle.
By contrast, the Americans sensibly kept games they invented like American football and baseball (or is that just a variation of the girls game "rounders") pretty much to themselves. This means they can hold championships in which American teams always win! An excellent idea. The World Series for example (although it does beg the question "How much of the World actually has to be involved to call it World?" - I wonder if therefore the American Civil War should be known as the First World War, with the other two slipping to 2 and 3 respectively? Just a thought).
Think of it Engishmen - the FA Cup could be the World Cup, the (Cricket) County Campionship could be the World Championship. We would not have got pounded by the West Indies in the 80s or had to wait 20 years to win the Ashes and every 4 years we would not have to either fail to qualify for the World Cup finals or get there and lose on penalties to some team who had actually been unsporting enough to practice them!

A power play is actually a hockey term, a team plays a man down for 2 minutes or more when they commit a penalty. The punishment in soccer is more sever as we saw Poland played 10:11 for the final 15 minutes plus after their player drew a red card.

My world cup runneth over! In a little over an hours time England play some other team and I can drive home in splendid isolation, have the road to myself, marvellous. It’s a great game!

Whoa there! I guess we'd have to be separated in the stands had we attended the games 😀 You missed my point - I was actually paying the German team a compliment. My memories of the Cup go back to 1974 and I recall seeing the German team kick butt way, and I mean way better than what I saw them do in the match against Poland. That the Polish team performed disappointingly is another story altogether. So, just to make myself clear - I think generation after generation, the Germans have played increadibly well, and in my opinion, the current team is not as good as some of the teams Germany had in the past.lubitel said:

OK, leading up to the Germany v Poland match this week I heard many stories about the classic match between these teams in the 1974 Cup Semi finals. Germany won 1:0 in a game played in terrible rains on a field which was more like a pond.......
So a story of my own. Around 1977ish I played in the first organized soccer league in my home town. There were so few children who signed up that they spread the age group from 9 to 13, I was 11 if it was 1977. I was a fast spastic kid who could run all day and my coach took a liking to me pretty quickly. I was the only player on the team that he taught how to tackle and he always was pushing me to be aggressive on the field and to "go get the ball." He was German, just a few years living in the US.
When I heard about the 1974 match I immediately thought of him. In that first, or maybe it was the next year, we were playing a game when the heaviest rain I have ever seen started. It just poured, inches of rain fell in no time flat. The other coach was ready to call the game and my coach was adamant, "No, we will play soccer in any weather conditions." It was great for us kids, it was just rain and we were loving it. The ball hardly went anywhere when kicked, but sliding on the turf was more fun than an 11 year old should have.
So, why did I think of this coach? Yeah, he was German and surely was aware of the 1974 match which Germany won in the rain, but there is more. My coach was a former member of a German World Cup team. His house was just a few numbers up from the school yard we played in and after the last game he invited the team and our parents over for a cookout and celebration. He showed us all of his trophies from Germany and photographs from his playing days, and really, he was a World Cup player. Pretty cool, as I wonder if he was a member of the 1974 team. He seems in my memory now to have been just a little too old to have been that recently removed from such a level of play, but who knows. Now though I understand why he was so adamant about playing in the rain.

A great story, thank you for sharing it. I want my children to grow up surrounded by such humanity, some day. Not only competition for competition's sake, but overcoming reality as it comes, not only "when the conditions are right", and enjoying and becoming in the sport. Pretty close to what the "ancient" greeks thought about the beauty of motion (and thus, the implicit beauty of sports).rover said:

It is bad, Fox Soccer Network, who you would think would naturally do this is of course a competitor or ESPN/ABC/Disney so they only have a half hour show once around 7 pm. They do show the Sky Sports News which I am sure has a fair share of WC talk, but not dedicated.
ESPN, you would think they would promote their own programming with a highlight show, no, poker was on the other night and they put replays of the game on at 2 am.

For all you football tragics out there, who not getting enough coverage of the world cup. Try logging onto SBS.com.au and follow the links to their coverage of the world game. Here in OZ, we are getting full coverage of all the games on free to air T.V. Admittidly it is in the middle of the night, but the most important game is replayed between 5 & 6.30pm. There is also a full rap up of all the games between 7 & 8pm , plus other football related programmes during the evening and it`s ALL FREE!!! Englands two late goals were crackers, but TnT were not disgraced, they played very well. At this level all the games should be resonably equal contests,hopfully the standard of play will continue to improve.
