Go USA!

Well done Ghana!

Another solidarity post while no comment from USA RFF membership. THIS IS SHAMEFUL, taking into account the good fight of the Americans football team !

What's hapening to you guys, stucked shutter or what ?

McCaulay, do you think that a close game should possibly be decided by an unintentional and inconsequential hand contact with the ball?

I'm rooting for Mexico. My underdogs are France and Germany (fancy that).

I thought in a post not long ago you had said you would not actively seek controversy, are you not trying to bait me now?

It's hard to sing Kumbaya during the World Cup. We've behaved pretty well, it is very remarkable. We're not even on the second stage, though ::eek::

The US team showed a lot more effort and desire in today's game against Italy. I give them a lot of credit for hanging in there after they were reduced to nine players.

Ahhhhh, we showed some spirit!!!! Now I can cheer for two wins in the final games of group play, GO USA, GO ITALY!!!

Now, the match to watch tomorrow: Brasil vs. Australia. That one will be interesting.

The one which will surely keep me on the edge of my seat is France vs. Korea. I like both teams, but France has had trouble, and is having support issues at home too; if France doesn't win this one, it'll be a blow to them. But Korea is too confident, which was Brazil's undoing back in 1998. I enjoyed watching Korea (and Turkey!) back in 2002.

BTW, Rover, I just found out that Univision has a local TV station here in the Twin Cities (tells you how much popular TV I actually watch). I have basic cable, and they had been systematically removing international channels. Haven't used a "bunny ears" antenna in a long time...time to go and buy one.

I have been looking for Spanish TV broadcasts of the game. I have Univision and an other channel which I actually do occasionally watch soccer on, but they are not rebroadcasting the games. It would be nice to catch even a rebroadcast in prime time.

With my work schedule today was the first chance I had to watch any of the Cup games and I'm glad to see the US gave a much better account of themselves than against the Czechs. Now, if we can just pull out a win against Ghana and Italy can beat the Czech republic, we're good to go!

And yes, I did grow up playing soccer (and watching NASL soccer on TV, anybody remember that?), but I switched to even more obscure sports (fencing and beach volleyball) in high school and college :D

Portugal were quite enmtertaining yesterday, the thing is Iran were very disapointing, they lost the game by the way they are playing, even Angola can do a better job, they are at leaat-though they ahve their limitations-playing like professionals do...I'm still unsure about portugal their individuality, got them to score a couple of great goals, but what else??

I love Ghana, yesterday they really got me frustrated, the way they penetrated into the czech's depth was incredible as much as their awkward finishing was...
But they've closed it in the end, african teams lack this, they should ahve closed it earlier...

Italy and the us, well i'm italy's fan since 1994, i was happy at the start, although the us had hardly left any space for them to play(great entouthiasm of their side i must say) but they've scored a splendid goal, yet that idiot Zaccardo got me back to the land of reality, this game was a typical italy game, USA were solid, fast, gave a very high rythm to the game but anyway, i donno why Lippi got Del Piero in, other than that he couldn't find his form lately, he also needs space, and he's not the same del piero so the last thing he could do was to find his own space, and why the hell Iaquinta instead of Toni, Toni was doing a good job, and he was really frustrated, and why keeping the Perrotta, he's an idiot for god's sake, the only good sub, was Gattuso for Totti,a nd IMO he should have started, Zambrotta also did a good job, although he's not really in form...

the good thing about this group is that it's still open, Go Italy, Go Ghana...

Well Zambrotta was the only real player on the wings, and he didn't come out that much, he wasn't even in form, if Lippi gave a chance to Odoo, he'd have put the italians on fire, Odoo isn't great defensively, but zaccardo isn't a genious either, but he's great upfront!

Italy's main mistake was in keeping the play narrow. They made little use of the wings - an essential tactic when there is a man advantage; make the other side cover all of the pitch. Playing up an down the centre half of the pitch was a mistake.
On the other hand, the USA, when in posession, made good use of the wings. There was one incident where 5 italian defenders were covering one american forward - the ball was moved wide and the italian defence was turned. A fine demonstration of sensible play by the US.

Can you come and coach my son's team?

Too early to tell, but I'm a little disappointed with Brazil's performance so far in the match vs. Australia. They started well, but now are playing the same way Mexico plays when they feel frustrated. OK, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, really. Perhaps that's the problem with being so good and having such a high bar meeting high expectations.

Perhaps both teams will do a little bit of "ohmmmm" during half time.
