Sadly Bill, at least here in the US when thinking of our pro sports.
I do think more people care about the World Cup here in the US than the Stanley Cup.

Brazil are favourites, but then they are favourites at every World Cup. I think Ivory Coast bear watching, the African nations are getting stronger all the time. I want England to win, but have premonitions of a semi-final penalty shootout, again...
Re: Rugby World Cup, yes we took 40 years to win it... but it was all the sweeter for who we beat to win it.
Ps. Hockey? Thats this? It's one of those funny schoolgirl sports like basketball and baseball right?

AndyK, you forgot girdleiron, you know, where a bunch big blokes run around a paddock in padded suites. Oh, And we have to let you win occasionally, keeps you interested . The last time England played Australia at football, what was the score again?

I believe you won 3-1. But then it was only a friendly and we used the game to tryout new tactics and players. Don't forget Erikson subbed the entire team at half time.

Since when is a football / any match friendly? Especially between England and Australia!

I have a special affection for Argentina and spain, and i believe in Iran!

Who is the big player on the French Team who was injured last week?
You guys have to help educate us US guys.
Press here is interested as the US Team is ranked in the Top 10, but I have not seen a prediction that the US will make the elimination round. Down year for Italy and Germany is the buzz I heard on another show.
Is it Brazil's Cup this year?
That's Ecuador with the big win over Poland. Yes, Deutschland 4-2 over the Ticos.
U.S. line is 100-1. Forget those rankings once the Cup begins - they mean nothing at all.
Cisse is injured, but les bleus have Thierry Henry, the most consistently productive European forward over the past 3-4 years.
Germany has home field, no small advantage. Italy feuds and fusses - what else is new? They will come to play. Since they're in the same group as the U.S., we'll see firsthand.
I can only wish I was there ...

How to answer you in a propper good manners way.... Let me think.....And I have very few minutes before the match England vs Paraguay.....Help !!!!
Ok, here it goes, quick and dirty:
We, the peoples of the whole terraquean globe, including much of the USA citizens with their Latino growing community, offer you our kind understanding to your question, and cannot answer it. We have not fully grasped already the complexities of Nature, Humankind, Science etc. Football it is just one of those natural phenomena we grow with, like breathing, eating and loving.
Another one is Art, perhaps this is your clue.

Oh, you mean soccer? Looking forward to spectacular fake dives and academy award winning phoney writhing on the ground......and weak teams keeping all their players back for the whole 90 minute yawner, praying for a tie so as to win it by the ridiculous shootout.
Real men play contact sports, like hockey, Aussie rules football, rugby, and American/Canadian football.....on this side of the pond we penalize the divers, not the the guy who accidentally bumped him.
Don't get me wrong, Soccer is a very popular sport in North America for women and the more timid kids....

OK, England 1 Paraguay 0.
Therefore in order to regain my appreciation for the brrrrittish, that went low for me since the Malvinas war, I am looking now at a moovie about King Edward and Mrs Simpson.
Somehow, the Brittish look much better while gracefully receding from royalty, than when trying to conquer a new one.
Cheers,
Ruben

You're telling me - they stole my family's titles and gave them to Prince Charles and Lord Snowdon.

The lesson to be learned from the Falklands war is 'Do not start what you cannot finish.'
Ps. I should add that I like the Argentine people. It was Galtieri who (IMO) f***ed up.
Anyway back on topic... ENGLAND are off the starters blocks! Not the greatest of games but a win is a win. First games in a tournament are always a bit scrappy.

I don't know who these two folks are or were, but upon the film about King Edward and Mrs Simpson, my appreciation for him continues high. A new element of importance the moovie added, was the offerings of the then PM, a low profile fellow called Baldwyn, to Edward, to continue his bed proceedings with Mrs Simpson but in prived, otherwise....
"They don't know who are they dealing with" answered Edward, I am not going to lie either the Brittish people, or degrade Mrs Simpson, nor be myself blackmailed as a free man.
Meanwhile the issue was becoming a major semi-contitutional crisis in Britain. Churchill was supportive of Edward at the parliament, and the most close friend as perceived by Edward. Both tryied to slip a formal marriage by all, almost all rules. But the tryial went stucked at the Parliament.
Edward and Churchill met. Churchill asked Edward for time and patience. Edward, after crying at the window, looked straight into his eyes and told him "they are never going to allow me, aren't they ?"
Then Sir Winston sadly answered: "Look through the window, look at this land, it is your land and your chair, the haighest one of the Brittish Empire."
"What happens to you Winston?" Edward rebuked, "would you accept to become PM knowing beforehand you cannot marry the woman you love and have your children"? Churchill proudently kept quiet, overshadowed by the giantly principled attitude of Edward.
Edward abdicated the throne, in favour of his brother, pictured as rather an underwear wetting man, married Mrs Simpson at Church and under the world press close followship, but boycoted at the wedding by the whole royal family. Not only at the wedding but for life. They lived some further 35 years of love, until Edward died by 1971. Mrs Simpson outlived him by many years, but with a broken heart.

Do you get me folks when I say that no true artist can be crowned under the system ?

Ruben

Edward and Mrs Simpson is always viewed through rose tinted glasses by Hollywood etc. The fact that Edward was a fan of Hitler and a Nazi sympathiser is often overlooked, the fact that Simpson was a money grabbing socialite in it only for the position is also overlooked.
Now can we please leave the politics and get back to football.

Oh yes: Trinidad 0 - Sweden 0 !
Ps: Isn't it the case that along the past and present century, Edward was not the only one among the royal family with these political symphaties ?

Just some guy, you know?

This was a fantastic game, even on my side of the pond. I'll ignore the politics for now. And since it's noon somewhere, I think I'll have a bottle of Guiness Stout to celebrate a great opening-round game.
Enjoy the rest of the Cup, everybody.
Cheers,
