Ruben: That's my point....the lions WILL win if there's overtime, unless the Christians EARN the win, not pathetically play for a tie and win it with a couple of lucky kicks.....how soccer fans allow 90 minutes of blood, sweat and effort be decided by what amounts to not much more than a coin toss is beyond me and most North Americans....

Hey Socke,
Thank you & I forgot to mention in my last addressing to you that I don't only dislike beaches, but offenses to any RFF membera under any circumstances, following one the most cellebrated phrases of one of my compatriotas, Ernesto Che Guevara:
"We should feel any slap against any person around the globe, as a slap in our own face"
Cheers,

You have never had, my good friend, nor I believe you'll ever be against anyone. You are a very fine member in my opinion, always wishing to help from the depht of your heart, instead of showing himself like me.
Cheers to Friendship !

See, that's what football always turns into.
And sports, in general.
Anyway... Czech against USA 1:0 after five minutes.
I predicted 4:0 as final score. Sorry guys
i still like you!

Interest in the World Cup? Related or not the FIFA website just went down.
I predicted 4:0 as final score.
That would get the boys home in time for July 4th I am sure.
How does the goal differential factor into this first round?

After thinking it some 48 hours, in my opinion ex-King Edward nazi symphaties may hynder the image he left. But I don't think at all that it can belittle too much his great personal DEED.
I can be mistaken in my political symphaties, or in whatever I think, and up to day I have in fact been, and quite grossly. Yet the important, the substancial, is not what I think, but what I do according to the choices life puts me in front of.
Within this frame ex-King Edward, according to my knowledge, continues to rank high, at least for me, for the PERSONAL unprecedented behaviour example he left behind.
He unprecedentedly abdicated the Brittish Empire crown, on behalf of his principles, his personal freedom and the honour of his wife. He rejected a life of utter luxury and ego, to fulfill a life of love and personal freedom. Any other king has ?
Sorry if it is to the Windsors' high dislike. It cannot be otherwise, unless they abdicate too.
Cheers,
Ruben

Normally matters only if two teams are tied for second place, then the team with the better factor enter the next round.

How do offsides work in soccer? (I'm NOT watching USA -Czech game in the 27th minute....oops USA just hit the post).
I assume it's a floating offside line unlike hockey.....but if the attacker can't be behind the defender before the ball, what's stopping the defender from stepping forward and ensuring the ball is behind him before the attacker?

At that point padding became necessary to prevent death on the field.....excellent, now THAT'S a game!
Only prepubescent girls wear padding.
As for football not being exciting, coming from a American 'Football' fan that's laughable. What is exciting about a game that moves three feet, stops for five minutes while the entire team is subbed, then moves another three feet, stops for five minutes while the entire team is subbed, moves three feet..? and what's all this playing in quarters nonsense? Haven't those pansies in the padding got enough stamina to play for 45 minutes?
I remember back in the 90s a visiting American 'football' team were challenged to a game of rugby. They chickened out because they couldn't wear their padding.
And then there's the Baseball 'World' Series. 'World'? What world?
Still its what you guys like and we'll never understand it, and Football is what the rest of the planet likes and you'll never understand it.

From a technology point of view the World Cup is a desaster! All the money they spent on personalized tickets, officialy to balance the nationalities of the spectators in the stadiums, didn't help at all.
Personaly I know a couple argentinians who had no problem buying tickets for 145 Euro from the black market in Hamburg some 20 minutes before the game started.

OK, Moderator Duty.....
No more Soccer vs Any other sport stuff here
Ya either like it or not, that is fine, lets not argue over it.
Hey, start a thread to discuss it in the "And now for Something Different" place.
2:0 by the way,...... I am starting to not like Pherdi for his prediction.

C'mon Rover, pretty harmless stuff......sorry for baiting the Euros, but it's fun and they give as good as they take!
Pherd, I guess I get it, if the defender steps forward and doesn't draw the call then it's almost certainly a goal, right?
Can an offside be called anywhere on the field?

The Offside Rule Explained
Many teams play a very good 'Offside trap' where you will see play approaching their area and the entire back row will move forward as one leaving an opposition player offside, they then win back possession.
