At the moment, none. Iran-Angola and Portugal-Mexico ended an hour ago (1-1 and 2-1). In two hours from now it's Argentina vs The Netherlands and Ivory Coast vs Serbia & Montenegro.
 
I'm very very disappointed at how Mexico made it to the next round, proud at how Germany is performing. I'm betting the surprise will be when the Dutch face off the Germans... 😱

USA! USA! USA! USA!

tody is the big day, am I right that the Italy v Czech Republic game is at the same time? High drama. Every USA chant will be followed by "Lets Go Italy!"

Sorry to hear that.. Would have thought it didn't apply to the 2006 selection of players.. bunch of hard workers if I ever saw some.

Anyway, the game -which was even a decent one to watch- with Argentina ended in a 0-0 draw.. Both teams go to the next round..

From what I've seen, it feels like we've come this far by not losing, and the Germans did so by winning..

Haven't seen anyone talking about Portugal -- I think they're to be taken seriously.

Argentina-Holland 0-0? I had much higher expectations for that match, even if many of the starters were not playing.

USA-Ghana in a couple of hours. I'm trying to figure out how to disappear from work for that time. I do think USA can win, and also I think that because the Czechs have injuries, Italy can win.
 
God will I should live so long, I will learn a lot about soccer when my 2 year old grandson gets old enough to play. Right now, I am like many from the USA that soccer isn't well enough understood to enjoy. So I haven't been following this thread. That said, 431 posts so far, 4,160 views; are you trying to tell me the rest of the world likes soccer?

The first time I really looked at soccer was during the World Cup of the mid 1980s. I was impressed. Sheesh, most of them never stoped running. An injury got a quick spray of the legs, a drag to the side line and no more attention except to the game. Try that with USA football! Of course, in football, the hitting is more constant, expected and accepted; some on every play. It's intentional, not incidental, or even made to look that way. Still, time to rest between plays, immediate attention to injuries, etc.

I do like to watch at the World Cup level when I have a chance. Have to cheer the USA team of course, and Korea (my wife's originally from there), but don't have any other real favorites.

Just wanted to comment and give my two cents with all the attention in this thread, even if I haven't read it. You wouldn't see that kind of nubers for football or baseball playoffs.

RFF membership is very international so it makes sense that a World Cup thread would attract a lot of attention. And an increasing number of Americans are becoming interested in the game. For me, the World Cup is a great month-long spectacle, equal to the Olympics in holding my interest.

What I heard - at work, and in the train, and at the grocery store - is that both Argentinia and our Holland wanted to lose this match, in order to avoid facing the true Titans in the next round. No-one elaborated on who the true Titans ARE, though, and I'm slightly ill-informed. Who do you think they might be?

my colleagues were 70% for the Czech Rep. and 30% for Italy, but that's often because french supporters hate the italian team with a passion 🙂 I'm french-italian, but when it comes to football, my heart beats for the Squadra Azzurra!

In Prague the streets are quiet and nobody is celebrating. At least my czech colleagues won't bother me with bragging over a victory ... they tend to be like the french in this 🙂

P.S. : I'm french so I can say this! 😛

Hmm -- The Trinis number only 1.1 million, and they made it to the World Cup. Not so tough a qualifying schedule for them, to be sure.

If the US feels bad (and let's face it, the vast majority of us couldn't care less), the Czechs must really be unhappy.
