Hey folks, World Football Cup started

Just got home from work and haven't seen either game but I thought Argentina would beat Germany. They are so good at the dark arts of the game I thought they would ruffle Jens Lehmann in particular. A nasty man who is easily got at and then he does stupid things. In general a dodgy keeper but an excellent shot stopper, I'm sure he did well in the penalty shootout. I would have liked to have seen Argentina in the final but the coach apparently paid the price for sitting on the lead when they got it. Too much at stake in these games...

Italy and Germany met four times in the world cup, and Italy never lost, so I have to hope they don't start now.

History seems to hold itself true generally during this WC. Brazil never lost or even got a goal against a African team. Germany never lost against a South American team in, I think, the Quarterfinals.
Lets hope that doesn't stay that way :D

This time they will, Francesco, let me tell you ! Get your Kleenex ready for this game. Our boys are surfing on the spirit of their team play, of their will and their enthusiasm. They learn fast and Argentina had been just a new lesson for them.

Over 700 posts and over 6000 hits in a totally superfluous thread ? I mean :
WIR fahren nach Berlin ! And there we will waltz the Brazilian dancers out of the game. And that's IT ! :D :D

Where is Socke and all other German folks ?

Started in a pub belonging to a brit, after the game I walked off to a pub belonging to a brazilian girl and later to a mexcian restaurant with a libanese cook.

At the moment I'm slightly drunk and try to figure out how that MacBook works.

Tonight I'm at a birthday party, most of the people there will be from brazil and some from Colombia. That'll be fun!

Did Argentina ever loose a penalty shoot out?

Germany got much farther than everybody here hoped for, now everything is possible.

Ah! That's where I have two souls in my chest, my girlfriend's brazilian.

Fitzi one of my kids is attending the Goethe Institut in Berlin this summer and she says the supporters have gone crazy. :) Just saw the Germany - Argentina game and I thought it was quite well played so I don't know what all the moaning was about earlier in the thread. People don't like to see the ball passed around? Isn't that how the game is supposed to be played?

Hmm, a true Reform vs. Countereform match. I'll watch and see if there is no Opus Canis there. You never know with such a dedicated fanbase, and I'm not talking soccer ;)

Seriously, every Germany match has been a match to watch. Besides the Argentina vs. Mexico and France vs. Spain.

I'll be going to a British pub tomorrow to watch the France vs. Brazil match; in the U.S. Well, I do live in a "blue" state (no pun intended), so it'll be relatively safe...

It'll be interesting to watch who roots for whom.

Argentina's exit was really frustratiung, it was also stupid to withdraw all your guns just because you think you are gonna beat the germans with a one goal's lead...

It seems that Italy have more luck than ever...I wanna see them in the final!

I must admit it is much more comfortable to sit on a 3 goal lead. :D

OH yeah :D

Edit: it's the 1st time for me to cheer for Brazil but i really don't want to see France with the last 4.

Come Portugal!!!

GOOD MORNING SOCKE, NOMADE AND ALL CONCERNED AND ENLIGHTHENED MINDS,

Yes Nomade, you are right. After a sleep I awake with the same conclusion. The Argentinian defeat vis a vis Germany has a name and surname: Jose Pekerman, the coach. Being defeated while at the bench we had players as Saviola, Messi, Riquelme, Aymar, etc, etc - points directly to the coach.

What this means? It means that defeating the German team is not mission impossible. The weakest point of the German team being no less than their advantage: home. Home = extreme nerves. This was cleverly exploited by Pekerman by owning the center of the ground, imposing its rythm and driving nuts the Germans furthermore.

After all, let's remember the German team was unable to beat Argentina until the penalties. For us Argentinians it is a pitty, but for you, prospective rivals of Germany is a point of optimism.

Back to the Argentinian coach. The problem here is that the man that sinked Argentina by his own hands is the same man who is signed for the great Argentinian achievements during the WFC campaign.

Argentina showed during the whole campaign being able to play as a team, for the first time in many years, exactly the formula needed for them to win the championship. Playing good out of question. The whole Argentinian campaign being such of leaving us all proud of them.

Pekerman. Very interesting dilemma of life.

Nevertheless, I cannot say at all the Germany victory was undeserved, (Socke, take a beer and start breathing), since they won in an even match, but THEY won, showing able to play no less good and to overcome their own nerves.

PS: Andy K - you have too a lesson to learn with your petty Evita joke. But I leave it up to you to think and discover, the first test being your very will.

2002 after the final :)

The great thing that Argentina did in the first half was take the German supporters out of the game. They did that by witholding the ball from Germany. In fact they bossed Germany for about the first 70 minutes or so until the coach took off Riquelme and put on Cambiasso. He replaced a midfield creative with a defensive and thats where he lost the game. If he had replaced like for like things might have been different. Maybe. Pekerman left quite a few really good players (like Zanetti & Veron) out of the squad because he had built a team around a particular system and he really wanted the 11 on the pitch to play as a team to that system (which appeared to revolve around Riquelme). His mistake was conservative thinking when he had the game won and the Germans cowed.

England are not playing badly. They've obviously done a bit of work on the training pitch the last few days, that throw in from Neville in the 17th minute that resulted in them passing the ball around in the Portugal penalty area was a nice training ground exercise. The supporters are very helpful; they shouted "man on" at Hargreaves I think it was at one point (and he got rid of the ball in time). Both Pauleta and Rooney seem isolated, I almost wish England would play 4-4-2, go wide and get it into the box. Roll on 2nd half - hope the lads cool down at half time, its hot there...
