Hipster vs. analog hobby photographer

You are right in one respect though. There are folks who are old enough to be of the hippie generation are, in fact, now running the world. Most of those now in leadership positions were never actually hippies. I wonder what things would be like had they actually been hippies once upon a time.

I came late as I am a 70s guy but grew up in a hippy culture thanks to my older sister. It is funny when i was young all of my friends were open minded, change the world, love and peace type people and as they got older they turned into closed minded cynical right winger types. Our way is the only way. It's sad that they changed.
 
I was wandering around a funky market at lunchtime today with my Agfa Silette LK in a contemporary, leather, ever-ready case.

The thought "you look like a hipster!" came to mind. Then I remembered I was dressed in nerdy office clothes. Then I remembered I'm 45 years old. Then I remembered that even in my 20's I was never cool.

My mind is at rest. I'm a film hobbyist, not a hipster.

I will admit to being an original. I was living at 625 Asbury, corner of Haight in 1963. This was a year before runaway kids moved into the neighborhood. The newspaper columnist, Herb Caen, called them hippies.
Grass was $75 a kilo. I was working for ILWU local 6 as a longshoreman making a bundle at about $14 an hour on the night shift.
Eventually the Haight was overrun by drug dealers by the late sixties and I moved to Santa Cruz to go to school. This WAS the good old days.

Haha, yeah! I must admit, I have been wearing Doc Martens (Docs, as we called them) and Converse All Stars (Chucks) since the late 80ies and did not see a reason to change that. Now all of a sudden I was caught in all of that Hipster craze going on. 😀

Saw a ~twenty-somewhat~ year old on the subway today. He was wearing suede loafer shoes, tight trousers (just a tad too short showing some ankle), had a skateboard under his arm and a pair of rayban copies. I thought for my self, "how the hell would he skateboard with them shoes and those trousers?".

Was he a so called hipster? Was the skateboard something more of an accessory than a transportation unit?

I've been labelled as a hipster as well.

First time was when I got my self a fixed gear bicycle four years ago. Not one with a white chain, neon coloured frame and wheels. Just a regular track Bianchi, a beautiful machine. Why ride fixed gear if I'm not cycling in a velodrome? Well, I hate stuff that breaks, I hate fiddling around with stuff that should just work. Dumb the machine down to it's bare essentials an live with it, eliminate parts that can break or need care but are not essential for the purpose/function. No gears that will start developing 'personality' within a year, no hand-breaks to replace and tension, easy to run up and down stairs with if needed.

Call me hipster..


I use a safety razor, a cheap one from china which you load with a regular single razor blade. Why not use a six-blade cartridge shaver? I feel there's no real control over the blade, I just can't receive a really close shave with cartridge shavers, and the cartridges are insanely priced compared to a pack of thirty blades for my safety razor. Learn how to use a safety razor properly, and you will never see the point of a cartridge shaver again.

Since my education, I developed a taste for photography. Borrowed a Canon whatever-digital-not-sure-about-model from school. It was fun for a while, then I lost interest whilst looking at getting a camera of my own. large frightening beasts for a lot of money. Loads of numbers and stats which I had no idea what they really meant. New cameras out every time I went to look for a camera of my own. Solution: Buy a camera that is stuck in a previous decade a long time ago. I discovered the world of former soviet union cameras. They are cheap, built like tanks, rather simple mechanically and have 'dumbed down' screw mount lenses. In usage you learn about photography, not only applicable film photography, but digital as well.

Call me hipster..


It's a funny phenomena. Love how my Bianchi is really trendy this year as every other thing and piece of clothing fashion is set in the same 'celeste blue' colour a.k.a 'teal'.

Call me über-hipster-hypocrite.. It still won't change my view on good proper equipment, and it will still not make sense to skateboard in suede loafers and tight trousers 😀

Safety razors make you an anachronist, not a hipster. If you really want to get eco and frugal, get an old-fashioned straight razor. But learn to shave on something else first, or you'll carve more divots in your face than a 32-handicap golfer on an 18 hole course. A hipster would have a beard worthy of a lumberjack caricature, wear flannel shirts, and skinny jeans. And shoot a Holga because light leaks and lens flare look "retro".
 
Few weeks ago it was Friday radio talk show conversation, here, in Toronto.
The host Friday story was about cheap bear, called Blue Ribbon. Which is in shortage in NY, according to him, because hipsters likes it. He described american hipsters as people without real job, who are mimicking working class by drinking cheap beer.

I like to wear old film RF, leads to nice conversations with good strangers.
I like to use them for street photography too. Still the best tool for it.

I'm not sure if I'm looking like hipster with this RF 🙂

I have never, ever been accused of being a hipster, even though I own a couple of cheap Lomo cameras and wear bowling shirts every now and then. And, no, I do not bowl.

I have been asked numerous times if I am a cop. I think it is because of my extremely short hair (military cut) and my sourpuss disposition.

At least people don't jack with me too much when I am out shooting on the street.....😎
