For me its all about getting together with family and friends, but especially family. (Oh, and the Boxing Day Test and Sydney to Hobart race that start the day after.)

...Mike

Getting together with family and being thankful for what I have. Spending time with my Grandmother and younger cousins. I love to see the little kids be excited about Santa coming. I was raised Catholic, but I dont really practice. I am more spiritual than anything and thank the higher power for everything he has provided me with in life. I also try and volunteer some hours of my time during the Holiday Season.

When I was a kid, we always had a big family party and gift-giving on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6. Switches and lumps of coal were not unheard of, and Knight Rupert was a very frightening individual.

Hmmm... so you're either Christian (R or S) or Jewish (R or S) or Other (R or S).

So "Other", being the vast majroity of the world, is just an afterthought without differentation?

I won't even ask what he heck Festivus is - but it must be a favorite of the pollster/poster - why else would it be up there?

BTW: does Festivus have anything to do with Druids - like that picture of Stonehenge that comes up on my monitor at the office each AM?

Or maybe its related to the Roman Saturnalia? But since the Romans stole all their religion from the Greeks - what did the ancient Greeks do in December?

And, BTW, the modern Greeks, at least the few "R" ones remaining consider Epiphany (i.e. January 6) to be the more important Holy Day.

Oh, isn't it so darned messy!

Happy Holidays everyone!

My wife is Japanese. Thus New Years is the big holiday. Since I can't stand any of the various "holidays" I'm more than happy to go with the flow and do the New Years thing. It's an excuse to photograph the first sunrise of the year and drink special New Years sake!!!

I thought Festivus was from a Seinfeld episode - George's father... ?

In any case, it'll be fun to see my son opening gifts from Santa but I personally agree with Richard Dawkins (author of The God Delusion) that religion hasn't done the human race any favors - so I guess my vote is for secularism.

Cheers,
Alex

Goodness gracious - no wonder I didn't recognize it!

I "gave up" television in the 1980's - - that, alone, has spared me from having to be culturally relevant in an unsophisticated society for almost 30 years!

Isn't television the thing people used to stare at before they started staring at computer monitors featuring "the web"?

OMG!!! 😱

😉

I used to spend the 12 days preceeding the 25th worshiping in various malls and retail outlets. I would then spend the 25th in the fetal position gently sobbing.

This year I have opted out and am really enjoying myself.
