How do I put picture in the Gallery?

I just tried to upload the two pics I submitted for the new RFF Book. They are to be the first in my Gallery.

For both of them I got an error message that the file size is too large. They are both in JPG-format and about 1.5mb each.

Can anyone advise me on the max file size for Gallery photos so I can re-size these and others I want to upload?

I think the file size is 180 kb max. I usually size mine to 640 on the long side.

The maximum file size is 300 kb (maybe changed recently)
What I do is to resize the photo to 650-800 pixel on the long side and then save it in JPG with high cuality (in photoshop "save for the web" at 80% quality JPG aprox.)
