How does a worn black MP look like?

I... I've got to apologize, folks!

I forgot all about this thread after digging through the G5 for the pictures I made to sell Kevin (of Kevincameras) a Type-I Elmarit 28mm...

I'll send myself a note to post 'em when I get home.

Again, sorry about that!

This is what happens when all of life comes at one at once.

The black paint MP wears like any other black paint M camera. I have had my MP for over a year and the only wear is on the tip of the advance lever. They are a lot more rugged then people say. I have never read anything official where the paint is supposed to intentionally wear off. It will if you use it, just like any other black paint camera.

Have a look at Shintaro's site. http://homepage2.nifty.com/Shintaro/top1.html

I've had mine for about 9 months and it's starting to brass on the film advance lever, the rewind knob and all the corners, but only slightly. If you want I can post close-up images of these spots.

Call me weird. I think brassing is fugly. If I were going to buy a new MP, I'd go for chrome specifically to avoid brassing. If I knew the paint would stay black, I'd choose black.

Melanie,

I have to agree. My chrome MP is a stunner and will continue to be so for years to come. Nevertheless, it does have some shiny patches where the original Leica strap rubs (the black plastic "protector" just above the D ring is the culprit). With the little chrome elmar 50 and a nice Luigi strap (on its way from Italy as we speak), I have my perfect day-to-day camera.

The origonal paint tended to flake, especially if dinked like above the rgfdr adjust screw. The wind on lever is from the new series as leitz (UK) had no spares (about '80) when the wind on mechanism needed replacing, wear, and the old lever was not compatible.

If you are in third world, they will recycle the Kodak cassettes (and boxes) and try and resell them... It is like buying a leica II in Ru you have to be careful to avoid a scam.

Any camera they will remove from shoulder with razor sharp knife, normally by the strap cut stroke, best not to notice unless you have a black belt in martial arts, and like excitement, local peace officers may think one was 'disturbed'.

Some people cover the Leitz nomenclature with black PVC tape, probably optimistic, not many people will see Ms most tourists carry chrome plastic DSLR or DP&S.

Bonne chance

If you're weird, so am I. I have a black paint MP and I am taking reasonable precautions to protect the finish. Reasonable defined as things that make NO difference in my shooting routine. Is use a good well padded bag. I make sure I hang another camera so it bangs into my MP. I try to make sure my hands are clean when I'm handling (not a bad idea for any camera).

Bottom line. I don't want my BP MP to get brassy "on purpose". If, after many years it does, then that's the real deal.

I was thinking of Birmingham (UK) or S London (UK) where the kids shoot one another, for any effront...

The world has changed.

Funny, I always thought signs of wear on a Leica were indications of good, old-fashioned USE. Sure beats the dickens out of putting one in a glass case and never contaminating it with a roll of film.

During the installation of Aperture, I found a shot that has the slight bit of brassing around the corners. It's subtle. I only had it a couple years.
