do the prongs, grapplers go on the inside or outside of the barrel.

Joe, the "push-on" adapters, like the one in the photo, are, just as their name suggests, pushed on the lens - i.e. the "prongs" go over the outside the barrel.
The other type of adapters, often referred to as "screw-in", are screwed inside the barrel, just like regular filters.
So, in order to determine which measure of "push-on" adapter you need for your lens, you need to take a measurement of your lens' OD (outside diameter).
Some lens are made with thicker, and some with thinner barrels, so you need to check.
I was lucky in several of my "other" lens: I can use Series VI filters with proper adapters for most of them.
With some others, I was able to make simple DIY modifications in order to use my Series VI filters.
For example, I needed a way to use my 52mm filters on some of my lens for which I had Series VI (44mm) adapters. I also had a Series VI-Series VII adapter (Series VII is 54mm). So I just inserted an empty (glassless) filter ring into this adapter (which has 54mm opening/thread), secured it with gaffers tape, and got a usable Series VI - 52mm adapter, with which I can use my 52mm accessories - filters, hoods, etc...
I could also post some photos for illustration of various solutions and uses...
