How is the contax tessar 3.5?

I have just bought a contax IIa + tessar 3.5

I don't know this lens, how is it?

OOOH! Pretty! Looks like NEW! The Tessar is a high quality 4 element three group lens which is pretty much the same design at the Leitz (Leica) Elmar, the Schneider Xenar, and a host of others. You should find it to be a nice sharp lens, but f/3.5 might be a bit limiting in low light situations.

Al, I have a collapsable Tessar 3.5, but havnt developed any film shot with it yet. Are the collapsable nes any different really?

Hi,

it appears to be a rigid West German Tessar which has the reputation as being the sharpest of all Zeiss RF lenses.
And yes the a lot of other lenses followed the Tessar formula ;-)

I have a Tessar with a serial number just a couple hundred away from the example shown here. For use on Nikon RF cameras it works well (even though its a Contax lens focuses fine in the Nikon). Its a beautiful lens, brass mount and heavy chrome finish. I got it to compliment the higher contrast images of the new 50mm Nikkor millennium lens and it does that perfectly. Its compact, works well with the focus wheel on the camera, sharp, good contrast but not over the top, especially 'classic' gorgeous with B&W.

This very lens arrived at a new home in Yokohama just yesterday (thanks Gregory 🙂). Today, I shot a roll of Fuji Provia 400X with it mounted on a Zeiss Ikon camera via an Amedeo adapter (see first photo below). Unusual combination, but it worked quite well. Considering its vintage, its an impressive lens! Sharp across the frame, no light falloff in the corners even wide open, no distortion, and resistant to flare. Here's some of the test shots I took today.

In my experience, Rigid tessar showed superb performance. Although it is vintage one, it gives us a perfect colour corrected picture.

Ah ha, so this lens was Zeiss's answer to the Micro-Nikkor 5cm f3.5 ?!
