I've been approached by an ad agency with an interest to purchase a photo I shot for print ads. Their client is an upcoming cable sports network.
Having never done this, what is the ball park I should quote them? Should the size of the client be taken into account? Thanks.

You ask for too much they might not pay, you ask for too little you only get the acknowledgement, what do you want?

See if you can find current pricing through the ASMP. I've always priced based on use, distribution and size of reproduction. Also one time rights and not a buyout.

I am not sure anymore, but definitely do not use royalty free pricing.
I think it depends really, on how are they using this photo? Is it for one time usage for one specific magazine? Or is it a national campaign? Is it going to be in one magazine, billboards, bus stops, subway stations?
So I think you need to charge them according to the purpose, draw a specific legal documnet stating the intended use, and charge them accordingly.
I would think a couple of thousand of dollars, with limited usage, but I could be completely wrong on how the whole market works now a days.

xray: thanks for tips about the buy out. The rep from the ad agency did inquiry about pricing for a buy-out, and upon looking up that type of agreement, I'm not so sure that's something I would want to agree to...
However, I guess I should probably look at this opportunity a little bit differently than the perspective from a well-established photographer such as yourself. Would you advice me to treat this as a "foot in the door" opportunity and lower my demands? Or press on with high/fair demands?
