How often do people comment on your Leica?

I've only had my M6 for, almost, two months - in that time one guy has come upto me and said"Nice M6." Usually its just the odd look - as with many I'd rather no-one noticed at all

I did have a chat with the guy who recognised it - he's into old Nikon SLR's but obviously knew his kit...far more than I do!

Occasionally bystanders ask me if it is a Leica and " Oh, do they still make it!". Two of my M2's are black paint and not pristine ( to put it mildly). These tend to attract, mainly for the looks.
My other favourite " Oh nice looking camera, how many Megapixels?"
Once I was wandering around Tokyo one evening and i spotted a young girl, probably in her late teens, sporting a IIIf with a Summitar on it. My communications skill in Japanese is non existent and her English was just as non-existent. We nodded and continued shooting. She came to the end of the roll and even though I used screw-mount cameras for decades - unloaded and loaded that camera as fast as I can do a M2! I did bow in respect for such dexterity and we parted our ways.

Love that story, the universal language of Leica! 🙂

When I got my M6 a couple weeks back, I posted pics on my Facebook and one of my old friends, she goes "omg I would marry you for your gear!"

Actually, that weekend, I went back to visit home for a weekend. My little bro picks me up and he has two girls with him. He shows me his new Canon G7 digital and I show him my Leica. The girls seemed more impressed with the G7 haha how little they know..

Other than my one friend, no one has really inquired about my M6. One of my close guy friends is familiar with Leica but that's because he has an R6.

Most comments are along the line of "That's an old camera," when I'm shooting with my M6 bought new in 2001. One guy once asked me" Do you like-a your Leica?" Turns out he used to own a camera store.

Quite often, people comment "the old camera" or such, but to answer your specific question, Kyle, I guess it happens 2-4 times a year, on the average, that someone specifically says something that indicates that they recognize it as a Leica.

I just realized we met in the street once. Remember me? I had a IIIc and you had the M3. I thought it could be you but wasn't sure until I saw the URL of your photoblog.

Small world!

i get asked about my Leica all the time, only it's a canon VT. also, when i tell folks it's a canon, they usually look disappointed. i peeped a guy with a voigtlander rangefinder in a sea of digital at the obama rally last week. cool.

Almost never. The only one I remember was a generic "don't see many of those anymore." This compares to three comments in an hour the last time I used my Rolleiflex in a busy area.

My favorite comment ever remains "nice ride", bestowed on my F2AS + 105/2.5.

I was at Disneyworld in Florida this fall and had my M7 around my neck most of the time. One guy who was standing next me waiting for one of the parks to open asked me if I wasn't afraid to carry it around in such a crowd. Another guy with an M6 around his neck saw my M7 sitting on the table in a restaurant and said "nice camera" and paused to check it out as he was walking by. After that one of our friends, who carries a Nikon digital where ever she goes, wanted to know if Leica users had a secret handshake.

Otherwise I have only had comments from professionals who notice it when I'm taking pictures at some event. Most comments from the average Joe are in the "are you still using film" vein.

The best comment I ever received while using a camera was when I was trying to use my Rolleiflex at a car show. I was framing a candid shot when a little kid (no older than 5) pointed at me and screamed, "WOOOOOOOOOW! LOOK AT THAT KIND OF CAMERA!" It ruined my shot, but I got a chuckle out of it.

Anyways, like most people, I'd rather people not notice my cameras, thats partly why I shoot with a Leica. I started this post simply because the way some people talk on these forums, the world is filled with Leica nuts that want to gawk and jibber-jabber with us about our cameras! 😀

Hardly ever!

I’ve been shooting with digital SLR’s for the last 10 years. I have a friend who is a semi-serious photographer who also shoots with a digital SLR. We often talk about our cameras but I have never mentioned that I used to shoot film with a rangefinder. Sunday morning I met him at a church breakfast and told him that I had gone back to shooting film with my Leica. He gave me a blank stare. I don’t think he knew what I was talking about.

Within the first hour of walking around with my taped up M4-2 i had an older Japanese guy come up to me and comment on the camera, nobody else has commented since.

Hahaha great story! Gave me a good laugh. I think it's funny that the kid took more interest in your camera than the cars 😛 Very ironic.

What's really great is thelook you get when someone you are photographing on the street sees the camera you're shooting with and gives you that puppy, tilted head of confusion look. Only a Leica can do that.

I've noticed in some of my shots where, at that moment, the people appear to be thinking about the quaint camera instead of my taking their photos. 😀
