i think about buying a contax g1 and the price is not bad but the camera don't have the green lable inside! is it posible to update the camera easily??
i just want to have the option to use the 21mm lens (if i finde a cheap one)

please excuse my terrible english!

ok, i have to check if there is a service partner around me (i'm in austria but mayby there is a service partner in Germany)

i look around for a G2 or a G1 the (non green) g1 offer is from a local dealer!

meyby i should wait and buy a g2 on ebay??

as long as you don't intend to use the 21 or 35mm lenses you don't need the ROM update. I have an unmodified G1 for a couple of years now which is realy worn and misses some screws, but I never felt the need to have it serviced and updated.

I might send it in this year, the shutter dial cover came off, not much of a problem since I see what I need to know in the viewfinder but looks ugly :)

it's very hard to decide between the G1 and G2 .... the G1 looks cooler to me and it's ~200EUR cheaper but maybe i'll miss the AF lock button (i would use it all the time on my DSLR if i could not switch between a few focus points) and maybe the AF would also be better on the G2 !?

it's pain....

Best deal or not, how much more expensive will each film be, once you paid for the G2 ($ 200 extra) and ran 200 films though it? 400 films?

The work with a G2 will compensate in giving you better workflow and thus pictures. BUT the learning curve on either one is steep, you need to commit yourself to a totally different beast and method of working. In the end it is either: sell the G stuff, too cumbersome for me, OR: wonderful camera which lets me be free and helps me get incredible shots.

You are out on an adventure here. Never mind the cost! (I would say)

What is the estimated cost of a G2 with 28mm-45mm-90mm lenses? I did not see great deals.

i think i'll take the G1 set with 45mm TLA 140 and manual! the price is good and i think it will be great fun with my first RF :D

@uhligfd: Thanks for the link ... its possible to update the G1 there for just 29EUR ... so it's no problem if i ever want to use the 21mm or 35mm lens!

Yesterday I went to a famous italian shop, and said: "I love rangefinder Contax G". The guy at the shop was killing me! He said: "G1 is not a rangefinder, is a b***h of a camera. Autofocus!"
:)
Well, I won't calla G1/G2 rangefinder ever in my life, I was totally scered!

You succumb to bullies behind sales counters too easily, cangia.

Who has the right to define a term such as "rangefinder"? My German friends generally refer to Japanese cars as "cucumbers', not cars. Are they cars? Who would doubt that except ... now comes the i word, oh no: idiots ... Sorry.

The Contax G1, G2 are rangefinders, because they are not Brownies, not SLRs, not TLR. Auto focus or not, we still find the range, just as they do at he golf course: optically, but automatically, rather than with finger twittling. So what? With auto film advance, not thumb throws, so what? With Zeiss glass, not Leica glass, so what?

Contax Gs still have the rangefinder limitations of : no macro, no long tele, off-set image through the viewfinder, i.e., parallax errors between view and picture.

So, every AF-SLR also qualifies as "rangefinder" as it also finds the range (more or less).:confused::confused:

Cheers,

Well Uwe NDS, in Germany a rangefinder camera is generally called a Messsucherkamera: you determine (= messen) the range (= distance) through the viewfinder (= Sucher).

On an SLR you do so through the lens, I think. But not through a gizmo outside the subject-lens-film/sensor path as done on an SLR or on an LF camera on the ground glass. That is where the "rangefinder" designation comes from, NOT from rangefinding being automatic or not . Sorry.

As a package, I wouldn't pay more than 900$ for it.
I saw the black kit (g2,28,45,90,flash with case) sold for 1150$ BIN.

For what it's worth to you guys, the Kyocera Contax Service Centre in Tokyo told me today that ROM update/green labelling are done free of charge and take about one week.
