hp5 in diafine

i just looked at the massive dev chart only to discover there is no hp5 @1600 for diafine development.

i shot a roll of hp5 and tri-x, both at 1600, as a test for this diafine, (& the 28)

hhmmm...anyone ever tried hp5 @1600 in diafine?

the EI for HP5 in Diafine is 800, and TriX is 1250 (?), IIRC.

I've run HP5@800. But that's only one stop, I doubt that anyone would be able to tell the difference between my negs and yours once dunked in Diafine.

The real difference seems to be for the films that can get pushed 2 or more stops (Tri-X forex).

HP5+ is one of my favorites in Diafine. I rate it at 800, but your film shot at 1600 should still produce very usable negatives.

As for Tri-X, MANY people shoot Tri-X at 1600 when using Diafine, but I prefer about 1250. That extra little boost in the shadows appeals to me. Try both and see which you prefer. What I normally do is set my meter for 1250 and adjust on the fly for different lighting conditions. The flatter the light, the more exposure I give the film.

hp5 is the one film I would not choose again for developing in Diafine - - I was not pleased with the results and there are so many other ASA 400 films that I do like in Diafine. My son & I just finished a batch of 20 rolls (35mm) and decided that it does not enlarge as well as we would like - - the contact prints look great but they just don't hold up on enlarging. Tmax 400, Arista EDU 400, and Tri-X all fit our needs much better.
