HU: Nikon fans - refurb D60's @ Adorama = $299

Bought a refurb D60 two weeks ago from Cameta's on eBay for $272. You could probably call Cameta and buy one outright to save even more (no eBay fees).

FWIW I was all excited to try the D60 and 35/1.8 and I hated it. Ergonomics are the worst of any Nikon (D40-60) if you have large hands. The lens is sharp but has a lot of spherical distortion, a simple doorframe needs Photoshop help to look straight even on a web-sized image. And I usually don't care about bokeh, but this lens is a really good example of bad bokeh. Busy out of focus areas get outlined and rimmed, ugly stuff. Plus the lens is a lot bigger than you think, with the hood it is almost the size of the 18-55 hoodless. The older primes like the 24, 35, and 50/1.8 on a D70/80 are a way nicer combo and I think you trade the size of the body for the size of the lens so it comes out as a wash, except the ergonomics of the slightly larger body is so much better. At least that is what I will go back to.

Just saying...

That is an amazing price, I must admit! The D40 is an excellent camera, and I assume the D60 is even better. I'm happy to see that such a camera can be purchased for a reasonable price--I hope more people get into photography because of it!

Hi Frank

Hi Frank

Yeah, the photos and reviews from the new 35/1.8 leave a lot to be desired. Even though they're ridiculously cheap, I'd rather save for a better lens or just go MF with old MF Nikkors.

I like the size of the D40x body, which I think is about the same as the D60, but have medium hands. I still haven't gotten used to all the buttons, basically shutter, menu, playback and the jog OK selector are what I use.

The best lens so far for any Nikon is the 105/2.5. It might be a bit long at times, requiring you to step back a bit. 2nd best would be the 7 element 28/2.8. Best zooms are the 80-200 fixed 4.5, and 43-86 first gen uncoated.
