HU used M9

vintage is good, I've heard nothing but good stuff. Friend of mine got a nice ae-1 from him and the guy bought him a coffee.

The seller has a 30 day free repair warranty. What is the risk with only 1K actuations?

You better ask some M9 owners here about it. I thought that it was necessary to have a one year Leica warranty ... just in case.

I use to go to their store all the time to poke through the bins to find odd bits and pieces. The old guy that owned it was a real gas as was his wife. Very sweet. Unfortunately you would have to bargain hard to get something at a reasonable price. Just as an illustration here is what they have some Nikon F90's at (N90).

Nikon F90 Body, Cap, Strap, Box ex+/ex++ $225.00 Cdn
Nikon F90X Body, Cap, Strap, Box ex++ $275.00 Cdn
Nikon F90X Body w/ Nikon MB-10 Battery Grip, Cap, Strap, Manual ex++ $325.00 Cdn

You can find there cameras all over the place for under $50 in great shape. I understand once they moved out of the store they are working out of the house and the son has taken over the operation.

I've purchased several items from VV when they used to have a store front. Tim & his father are nice people...
On that note, I'd be wondering what exactly they would do to "repair" the M9....

If buying a used digital M, unless I know the previous owner, I'd probably opt for a warranty of some sort a la refurb/demo from popflash or dale, etc....

A repair on an M9 could be a deal killer fast, very much like a leaking transmission on a low mileage used car. Commonly referred to as a lemon.

Last year I bought a used M9 from an RFF member. He had bought it at an Ohio dealer 7 months before, but had moved to Pennsylvania. About 4 months later I noticed it had several hot/dead pixels. Leica NJ repaired it at no charge, and amended the records to show that I am the registered owner. I've had very good experiences with Leica customer service.

I also had an M8 that came used from an RFF member, and has not required service. So I've had pretty good luck with used digital M's. It seems like most problems arise and are caught within the warranty, and Leica is liberal in their policies.

Here and at a couple other Leica-populated forums, I can recall only one instance where someone had to fork over significant cash for repair. IIRC his sensor cover glass was broken in such a way it wasn't a n/c repair. As the fleet of digital Leicas gets older, I wouldn't expect Leica to service them for free indefinitely... but I haven't yet heard the screams of wounded wallets!

Solms isn't that 'client-friendly' at all, I had once an M8 with a problematic sensor (dead pixels) and because I was the second owner, they didn't even wanted to repair it. I had to send it first to a dealer for inspection who charged a high price for that and once they sent it off to Solms I got it back without the proper sensor replacement. It had to be send a second time. The ultimate price charged was therefore quite huge (almost EUR 1000). Luckily the original owner paid part of the repair costs.

Ouch, that certainly doesn't sound "client friendly"!

I wonder when and to what degree independent shops will be able to work on these digital Leicas. I'd think at least the traditional work on the mechanical parts should be feasible. And perhaps someone will come up with independent software able to map out bad pixels.

I bought a used M9. No problems. I dropped it (not a warranty issue) Sent it to Solms as well. No problem.

Quite amazing, as Leica's warranty is transferable. There must have been something else going on. Maybe the camera was out of guaranty... And a dealer charging for inspection before sending it in?:confused:Unheard of. Who was that?
