I'd been doing so here, but realized I hadn't been doing my patriotic duty to make someone bitch about something silly in a while, so it was time to give a photo its own thread. Thanks for helping bring balance to the cosmos.

I don't feel I have the background to criticise your photographs on their technical or artistic merit, Chris, but I do know that I like the peep-hole you let me/us look through at your town.

I 'get' the 'connecting tissue' argument and enjoy finding these photographs, either when consolidated into a single thread, or when you post them up for individual discussion. To my eyes there's always something interesting... and a wee bit strange.

The thing I've thought of doing, when I have the time, is a photo essay that asks the question "why not legalise drugs?"

I do know how destructive they are but then, so is alcohol, so are cigarettes, so is too much of {insert object of dislike here}. It would be really interesting to know just how much money could be raised from taxing the things and how much would be saved by not having to police drug dealing.

Are you suggesting that Chris is deliberately posting provocative photographs? I doubt that you are, but it's interesting that his images and captions trigger the responses that they do.

I'm not suggesting anything ... he does post a lot of provocative images and people seem to react predictably.

I would personally rather be evaluating (or commenting on) an individual image based on it's own asthetics ... if I want a treatise on social or political problems within the US I'll look at his body of work. He provides plenty of opportunity with the links at the bottom of his posts.

It seems to me there are a ton of photographic series done by highly regarded photographers that, if each individual shot were critiqued in isolation, simply wouldn't hold up to artistic scrutiny. So nothing wrong with the picture, in my view -- helps provide a sense of place.
