Hello Everyone.

I am new to this forum and hope I am not breaking any rules by posting a link to an E-bay item. If I am I apologize, please let me know.

I am unepexrienced in leica gear and have gained all my knowledge from the internet. I know I want an M2 and a 50mm lens. I am tired of looking and I am ready to purchase and start shooting photos.

http://cgi.ebay.com/LEICA-M2-CHROME-CAMERA-SUMMICRON-f-5cm-1-2-LENS-METER_W0QQitemZ200205794160QQihZ010QQcategoryZ30030QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This link is a camera I am interested in buying. I have watched ebay for awhile and noticed "M2 USERS" going for $550-$800. I saw a similar setup to this sale for $905 last week. I am not familiar with the cost of this lens so I wanted input on what a logical price might be for this set.

I know you experienced leica owners probably are asked too often for this type of favor and there are many variables to consider. I really have NO communication with anyone that could give me a real time response and hoped the members of this forum could help me out in the pressing time before this auction ends.

Thank You!
ROB

I'd wait for an M2 with lever rewind and a self-timer. That's just personal preference though. I find the self timer helps me grip the camera a little better. There was a nice one with the 50/2.8 elmar on just a couple days ago. The buy it now price was $750 so it may already be gone. If I didn't already have 2 I might have gone for it myself.

I wanted to add that I am mainly interested in the Camera and lens. The meter is of no value to me, to speak of, and nor the crappy camera bag. So I suppose if the meter is going to make the sale higher I should look elsewhere. It seems this meter usually shows up when someone sells this lens and body together though, and from what I remember it holds little value.

Thanks again Rob.

One thing I'd consider- if you want to use a 50mm, why not look for an M3? They can be had for the same ballpark price. The M3 with a 50mm is one of the best combos in all of photography, IMO.

This is a very early M2. I cant remeber if this is still the version you have to hold the button down on to rewind or not. If it is, you can have it "retrofitted" with the selflocking button. Otherwise this looks like a good user - obviously some marks on the top from the MC Meter (which is "iffy" at best as it is a selenium cell and they do "age" a bit). The lens is a nice Summicron - these are very well built and they do look "right". Quality of image is very good. A bit lower contrast than the modern 50's from Leica/Zeiss/CV, but no slouch either. I have a couple of them in the same range and still use them. Great bl/w lens too as it is very smooth in the mid-tones.
Even though it has been "checked" I would add a $100 or so for a clean/lube/adjust if you get it. Once that is done - you can most likely shoot for the next 10 years without worries.
The lens is good enough that you dont have to run out and find a new one either. Just get a hood for it. As for value, I really dont know but considering that clean 50f2 Summicron's of that vintage goes for $400-500 and if you can get the package for $1000 or around that - add the $100 CLA and it sounds like a good deal.
2008 Year Of The M2!

"Quiet Mouse"

I have a later version M2 with collapsible 50 that I'll sell for $750.00 This model is a user and has a serial number of 1014** andhas the lever rewind, which is a lot easier to use. Also, this way you'll have more $$ for film or a Rapidwinder for your camera..................

Let me know and good luck,

Scott

Thanks for the recomendation, but I am specifically interested in an M2.

Thank you for the offer "Sherm", I will surely consider it. Why do you wish to sale your M2?

I kind of like the look of the M2 without the self timer. But it is really no big deal either way.

Also, Thanks Tom for your opinion, I have read quite a bit of what you have to say these last 3 or 4 weeks.

Time is ticking.....:bang:

This will probably go up to 1000 or so and I'm not sure if I would want to pay that if I earned my wages in US$ (in euros it's a bargain nowadays). I would wait for a later M2 with rewind lever and selftimer and without the vulcanite problems (I hate holes in the skin, even though it's easy to replace).

That one has almost reached the high end of its' value. Those meters are so-so and worht about $40. As far as the button vs. lever, my button cameras (neither of which lock in) are both smoother in operation than the lever one. Except for convenience I don't think it's an issue.

The only reason for the sale is because I have two other M2's already, so I thought I'd offer it up. No worries if you want to go another direction.

Good Luck

When I wanted an M2 some months back I chose to get it from Youxin Ye -- wye7 at yahoo dot com -- rather than risk eBay.

Let it go.

Let it go.

I bid $850 and was automatically out-tapped. I was not set on it 100%. Being really interested in the camera and lens only, I did not want to pay extra for the meter etc. I also don't care so much for the paperwork and I don't really know if this made it go higher, but it was more than I wanted to spend on it.

I want a 50mm lens, but I am really interested in a 35mm lens, and if I can get away spending a little less on the 50mm it leaves more budget for my 35mm.

ALL I CAN SAY IS I AM READY TO SHOOT ONE OF THESE HONEY-COOLERS!:)

I carry around a CANON QL17 and shoot about two rolls in it a week. I love it but have read so much about the Leicas I am anxiouse to take pictures with one. I lost two rolls of film in my Canon last week due to the transport. This probably led to the allocation of funds away from my other hobby (hi-fi), to get the leica. I also carry a Nikon FM3a around mainly but the more I shoot that canon, the more I like the rangefinder.

I have never even held a leica, I hope it lives up to the hype! I don't expect a miracle and I know damn well that equipment does not make the photo, but great precision tools that do their job well turn me on. So I, from what I have read, I believe I will be satisfied. (when I find that special little leica to call my own.)

Sherm's offer sounds interesting... get in touch with him. If you want an M2 with a good 50 check it out...
