Trying to show some images that my father took with his just bought Zeiss Super Ikonta in 1953. Have sized them at 5x3 at 300dpi, less than a Meg and it will still not take it.
It’s pathetic when you can not upload something that small, I give up with this place.

Do you have a Flickr account or anything like that? If you have Flickr, you can upload them there, copy the BB code and then paste the code into your post. Might be an easier way to go.

That's what I finally did (uploading from Flickr). For a few years I struggled with uploading from my computer, but I find the Flickr method much easier and stress free. 🙂

I've never used the gallery here. I upload to Flickr.com and paste a BBCODE link here to display image files.

Well you have taught me something regarding Flickr,, I do not have an account but I will look,into it. I have a treasure trove of my late fathers images from vacations in Europe, I just thought I would share them. He won many competitions and rightly so, even made his own enlarger that I have.

Personally, I would very much like to see those images.

Also, you are not the first to be frustrated by this forum and the difficulty of sharing images. Its just not set up to do that conveniently. Especially if you don't already have an online image sharing service (like Flickr, Ipernity, Smugmug, 500px, or even Photobucket). I have always disliked the fact that if I want to share an image here, I have to first upload it to some image service (I'm using Ipernity right now), and then link to that. Multiple steps, multiple websites to open, and so on. For those folks who are already using their Flickr, Ipernity, etc. accounts anyway as a matter of course, its not such a big deal.

It might be the 300dpi that is causing problems. Almost all web images are 72dpi.

DPI is a meaningless term when displaying images on monitors. Only the pixel measurement matters. The size of the image is determined by the resolution of the screen. DPI is a measurement for resolution in print.

Flickr.com is inexpensive (I don't know if they still have the free option) and pretty reliable. I've been using it since about 2007 and have several thousand photos up there. I use their BBCODE links to share them on at least a dozen different forums and email lists I participate in. It's much better than uploading photos to one forum at a time for sharing, and the community of users on Flickr is enormous, lots more folks to share and talk about photos with (rather than equipment discussion, although there's plenty of that there too).

Sharing from Flickr to here is simple: Once you have an account there and load a photo or two, just click on a photo's "share" button, pick the BBCODE option, set a display size (1600 pixels is about right these days) and copy the BBCODE they show you. Click here and paste it into message thread. It will display. You can edit the BBCODE and manipulate the presentation it if you want, as you become more familiar with it.

The RFF Gallery has a file size limit of just under 500Kb:

"Maximum file size: 0.48828125 MB bytes. Only JPG files are allowed."

In practice, image sizes of 1024 pixels wide are optimal for uploading to the RFF Gallery.

All you need to do is resize the images in Photoshop or whatever to 1024 pixels wide, and save with an image quality (level of compression) that gives you an image file size under 488Kb. This is relatively simple to do in Photoshop.

As it turns out, you are correct. I knew as much but thought that it would have an effect on the file size and possibly compatibility. That happens to be myth that I have been blindly following for years. Oh well! You learn something every day.

I've been using flickr for over ten years, it's reliable and easy to use. Your dad's images sound great, it would be wonderful to see them.

It's also a good size if you embedd your images in a post, and avoids having viewers to use a slider to scroll left and right to see the image..

Like you, I have issues with posting photographs here.

A few times, when I have wanted to show a photo, I will load it on my facebook page, then put a link with a post here.

Since I now only make people photos of my family and they don’t want them, especially the children, on display on facebook or anywhere else, I respect their wish.

i found a solution - maybe not very neat but its pretty quick... i put photo on Instagram and then use button that share photo to other apps (and they are same company with fb so you just let it upload to fb) . then you go to facebook and open photo-open options and save to computer or phone and they are saved always under 100kb . then i just delete photos from social if needed... its faster than any converter and tweaking quality...

I think Flickr would be a worthwhile endeavor and also, having the ability tag and share your Dad's photos to a wider community would be appreciated.

Like your Dad, my Dad was a semi-pro wedding/portrait photographer and after his death 4 years ago, I discovered many beautiful period B&W photos 1930's, 40's, 50's (Boston area) and will share them here once I have a chance to scan, catalog, and upload.

Yeah, I've used this site since 2006 and it hasn't much since then. It's a blast from the past.

Out of curiosity, what other features besides drag and drop and mobile support are you after?

The things that keep me coming back to RFF after all this time are the community and the classifieds. I think the classifieds is the thing I'm really hooked on.
