Better the guy ran off-- though we have a new law now "castle law" , I think it means you can take him down to the darkroom and waterboard him in the print washer.

I should think development in fresh pyro, a proper stop bath, "fix" and thorough wash and dry, then firm contact printing might be effective.

That took about 3 years to sort out legally, he was never charged but it took a while to go away. He placed that brick at a specific point in the wall and framed it!
That is a sad fact of life. We used to have a saying something to the effect, "I would rather be tried by 12 that carried by six." That is 12 jurors rather than 6 pall bearers. 😛
But certainly one must make quick decisions in many cases, that may be debated by lawyers and courts for a long time in comfortable surroundings. On the street if one seems to have the option of safe retreat, that is probably the best option. In a home, there are other considerations, like family members to protect, or doors or windows that may not allow safe retreat.
I have some skills to protect myself, but I would prefer not to use them. In the case of the OP, he was confronted by a person breaking into his house. It so far has turned out well for him. That is to be thankful for.
