So I'm on the phone, whilst doing some stuff in Lighroom, when I hear a loud bang. Lo and behold, somebody is trying to rob me, and has forced in my front door. Great first day off (I'm on holiday from work)!
I wont bore you with the details, I did try to seriously injure him, but he ran away like a big girl.
The moral of this story, look into ways to back up your stuff. I'm not interested in starting any type of film vs digital thing here, but if you do work digital, back up your stuff off site.

I keep have a couple of katanas in my room, one is a iaito (looks like a real one but it doesn't have a sharp blade) the other one is a boken (made out of wood, works better than a baseball bat). they can have other purposes than training, although I doubt anyone will ever try to break in here...
good to hear nothing happened to you or any of your belongings - except the door. see you this weekend.

Nikon F on a good strap is pretty lethal. My friend in Mexico fended off several guys with one, I think the camera may have even worked afterwards, no word on the guy's head that connected with it though.
Have had a lot of trouble as of late with theft from the mail, $110 new mail box, but no one in authority seems to care much.
Better the guy ran off-- though we have a new law now "castle law" , I think it means you can take him down to the darkroom and waterboard him in the print washer.
Regards, John

We have the Castle Doctrine here too. Many states do. They say that the sound of a shotgun chambering a round is enough to scare the pants off most bad guys. I wonder if my Zorki could have the same effect. It certainly makes enough noise.
I'm glad things worked out for the OP. Things like that are on the rise, as the economy pushes people to desperation.

Thanks for all the kind words.
I understand things are tough for people, but it's no excuse. If he'd have been slower his face would have made repeated contact with something no doubt, so it was probably better he ran. I'm more annoyed at anything that my second day of holiday will be waisted as I have to sit in for the Police to come round again. Making me miss the sun is reason enough for good kicking.
New big locks going on the door tomorrow, they will not be Yale type (Google Lock Bumping).

Good man!
Most of the time if you stand up to a thief/mugger they will run.
Of course, there was that guy I encountered at 2 AM carrying an Uzi knockoff - don't try that with him. ;-)
Glad you are no worse for wear,
Randy

While I have lethal stuff laying around I think my M4 at the end of the strap might still be the best.I keep a 12-gauge Benelli Tactical Supernova loaded with law enforcement (low recoil) double-ought on hand for just such occasions. If you break into my house, I've got news for you.![]()
BTW, and this is just generalities, someone breaking into your house during the day when no one is home is looking for stuff to steal and NO confrontation. People that break into your house when they know your in it not only want your stuff but they get their rocks off hurting people.
I base this on my younger days and knowing low life types that really enjoy hurting people more than they do just robbing you.

I keep a baseball bat and a small flashlight near the bed (for blinding someone at night).
The worst is getting assaulted by one of those gangs who won't stop at anything; Though these often won't bother with middle class people.
Jewellers are terrified, though. They are a main target of violent assaults.
Glad it wasn't worse, and the guy just ran away. Stay safe!

Gangs are another matter altogether. From initiation beatings of strangers to so-called "polar bear hunts" these aren't the kind of BG's you can scare off easily. Most garden-variety intruders don't want confrontation, especially not the 12 gauge variety they'd get in my house. There are those, however, who thrive on injuring and even killing others. Gangs, armed home invasions, all dangerous situations that leave little time for thought or negotiation. A number of my family members are in law enforcement in southern California; the stories they tell.... I used to think that forensic photography sounded interesting. After seeing a few crime scenes, I don't think so anymore.

The best camera is one that still works!
