I got one of those too, I always turn it on when I go to work or to sleep. Get a nice phone call when it's tripped. Usually when I'm out of the country 🙄 Like last time when I was clubbing in Belfast..."There's a what in my garage?! A bat?! Baseball? Softball? Oh a live one!" :bang:

A neighbor has got a big german Shepherd dog. One day he took the dog with him, which is unusual, and that evening his house got broken into.

Happened to my parents too, that ONE time they took their dog with them someone attempted to break in.

My friends, you have to get too close to use a baseball bat, knife, or anything of that sort.

Consider a can of bee spray. It is deadly in the eyes. Or mace or pepper spray.

But the best is a pump shotgun being loaded. 99% of the time they will leave. If not, use the trigger. #8 in a 12 gauge is best. Make sure you kill him so there are no lawsuits about unlawful death or excessive force or whatever some opportunistic attorney can dream up.

And I am set up to use 12000 candle power in the face to blind him.

Outside the home, surrender the gear and call the insurance company unless you are a martial art expert. You can always buy more.

Home is where your family is. No one has any business breaking and entering - clearly they have bad intentions just by doing so. I know I don't plan to ask how their day is going and what they have in mind when we're standing there, face-to-face.

Clearly, you can't know what their intentions are, or if they even have any. You have any idea how many drunk kids, dementia patients, and developmentally disabled wander-aways accidentally make it into the wrong house?

Nobody demonstrates that they're a threat to safety simply by coming in a door. All this bravado is a little sick, most of us who have been in these situations aren't nearly so cavalier.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but my guy kicked through my door so I know he was not simply entering the wrong property. And I wouldn't say I was cavalier, more kind of lost the plot temporarily and simply couldn't believe what was happening.

Yeah, I'm glad you are safe, and the kicking-in-the-door intrusion is definitely one to get someone's blood going. You do just sort of go into autopilot, don't you. Feels like you're watching yourself in a movie. At least that's the best way I can characterize it.

ETA: I was expressing my feelings about the "shoot first, ask questions later" stuff later in the thread, not your reaction (I still keep a baseball bat next to the bed--but personally I'm not about to start a shootout in an apartment with paper-thin walls and my 2-year-old sleeping in the next room).

There is nothing cavalier about expressing a willingness to protect yourself in the face of danger.
How many times does someone wander into a house by breaking in a window or door? I would bet that is an extremely rare occurrence. I've never met a single person who has had such a thing happen to them.

As I said earlier. I pray I never have to use a gun to defend myself or my wife. It would be a life-altering (and not in a good way) experience.
But I don't plan to let my continued existence hinge upon the whims of some thug who breaks into my home.

A mere mention of politics seems to instantly consign a thread to the off topic forum but here we have a thread discussing crime/guns/various weaponry/retribution/violence and here it is circulating quite happily in the member's forum.

I'm not criticising the thread itself because we're all grown ups (I think) and can make up our own minds about issues and express our opinions freely and openly ... but WTF?

I'll add, regarding comments of shooting first and dragging the body in across the threshold, that it's a myth, a joke. Certainly these days in the developed world, it would not fool investigators.

Killing someone who wasn't putting your life in imminent danger is hardly self defense in the eyes of the law.

Self defense laws are codified differently in many states but one thing is almost constant: There is quite a bit of nuance and discretion exercised by law enforcement. Before anyone decides that they may want to "defend" themselves, it's very important to understand the concept of force continuum as it applies to civilians and the laws that bind their actions.

Justification of deadly force, as stated in personal defense training materials (read carefully; every word is important):

You may be justified in using deadly force only if you or another innocent party are in immediate and otherwise unavoidable danger of death or grave bodily injury. Your assailant must have the *ability* to cause death or disabling injury. He must also be in a position to use that ability; he must have the *opportunity* to cause you harm. AND he must actually show the intent and purpose to do harm; that is, he must place you in immediate *jeopardy*. Ability/Opportunity/Jeopardy

Basically if you think you'll likely be killed or maimed if you don't shoot, you'd better do it.
