I'm interested to know where you got this fact.

THis guy shoots with the 5D tel me which images are digital looking and how the M8 could improve upon it..

I have no objection to noise per se, as long as it does not detract from the image.This in analogue to grain in film.

The only digital noise that's analogous to film grain is luminance noise. Color noise isn't even close to film grain. From what I've seen on the web the M8 produces both, and in quantities high enough that sometimes it does detract from the image. It's not unique in that respect. It's just another digital output, very similar to what other digital sensors produce. As far as smooth output being "plastic," I guess Ansel Adams' 11 x 14s, contact printed, would be considered "plastic" too, since there's no noise.
 
It's not Canon's lack of noise that makes its images so plastic; it's something analogous to "smoothing" in conjunction with noise reduction. I can and do apply both to some of my images post process when that's the look I want but what do you do after hauling a heavy howitzer around in the field all day and you don’t want that plastic fantastic look?

PS. No cheesy plastic in this image- just good ol' Leica grit.

I chuckled at this thread because I've often been seriously unwhelmed by the flickr M8 pools. Lots of bland photos of people's girlfriends reluctantly posing for bokeh shots, or those classic "I just got my camera but I have no ideas" shots of people's kitchens, etc. We've all been there, of course, but there is real preponderance on those pools. I guess any new digital model is likely to attract gadget freaks first and photographers second. You'd find the same thing if you checked out the D-Rebel forums circa 2004. Flickr just isn't a good showcase for this camera's output, IMO.

I should take a second look at my M8 photos, I had no idea how terrible they really were. Indeed. All of the M8 photos ever taken by everybody are undoubtedly worthy of being painted with the same brush. Thanks for the enlightenment, I can now see the light. 🙄

You can improve on it by not concentrating on the brand, but understanding the equipment that's in your hands.

...and then you post a batch of precisely these images in the next post? I'll have to show you my gallery of available light coffee mug shots @f2 some day. It's some of my finest work. 😛
 
I'm familiar with the users you posted. tinyeyes and l'enfer are two flickr shooters that I like. I'll leave you more "mature" people to pat each other's backs without any pesky intrusions from people who disagree with you.

Thanks but actually that was Hong Kong- I'll be there in a few months and I can't wait to shoot the Chung King Shopping Arcade this time with my M8. That is the most target rich enviroment I've ever seen for what I like to shoot.
 
Gab, I see no improvements in the M8 examples you posted with regards to what Jaapv was trying to point out. Sean clearly demonstrated his awsome results with the 5D.

If you turn off noise reduction and shoot raw there's no "smoothing" to deal with. This shot, from the R-D1 of some people at a table next to mine day before yesterday appears to have at least as much "good ol' Leica grit" as the one you posted. I could post a raft of similar shots from the D2X with the same kind of "good ol' Leica grit."

With all due respect the image you posted seems washed out on my calibrated monitor but that must be the light. That cameras will produce sharper images under certain ideal lighting conditions is a fact. That an R-D1 can match the image below is fantasy. I have and shoot with both the R-D1 and M8 and never in a million years could my R-D1 match my M8 where sharpness and dynamic range of color are concerned. The sharpness (hand held) and dynamic range of color in the below non-PS'd file would be a tough act for any digital camera to follow let alone best. Please see the below image and it's full size link for the whole story.

Sailor Ted just wanted to say I think the Chinatown shots are very powerful. It took me a second look to realize that the gentleman in the grey jacket is contemplating the disabled person in your other shot.

Ted,

Yes, that's a fine shot. Being able to shoot at a small aperture in good light really helps. And I agree, the R-D1's 6 megapixels can't match the M8's 10, though the D2X's 12.4 certainly can -- especially under the lighting conditions you used.
