I shot a roll of film today...

There is a thread in the "I Shoot Film" Flickr group called "Those stupid rookie mistakes you keep making..."

Ouch. But still better than having film in there but with a leader that slipped off the take up spool. Or a roll that you can't rewind because the leader broke off inside the cartridge (and only finding out after opening the camera). Lost a very valuable roll that way over a decade ago, still regret it.

But it can get worse: A few weeks back I went to a concert. Brought my NEX-3 and my Nikon FM with Tri-X in it. I distinctly remembered there was a fresh roll in there. At the concert I realized that A. I left the NEX battery in the charger at home and B. There was no film in the FM after all. And the Lord's name was uttered in vain a few times...

I suspect these rookie mistakes can happen any time you get a "new to you" camera. On my first test roll after getting my Kiev 4, the leader slipped off the takeup spool. Removable take up spools were a new thing to me. I shot half a roll before realizing the rewind spool wasn't turning.
 
I too have been a victim of the leader getting stuck in the take up reel and thinking I was rewinding the film only to open the baack and expose the whole roll....
 
Had an issue one time where I hit frame 36 and the winder continued to advance. Shot another, and was able to advance. A coldness washed over me. Hit the shutter again and was able to advance. I opened the door and found that the leading spocket holes on the film had torn during the initial load 🙁
 
Going to an airshow tomorrow. Thought I'd use the OM2s and Zorki 6 for the static displays and a dSLR for the flying shots. I double checked and I'd forgotten to put film in the OM. I probably wouldn't notice until I got around 30+ shots on 24exp roll. 🙂

After looking at your website, I'm sure you are correct. That's some of the best wedding & portrait stuff I've seen.

Doesn't anybody watch the rewind shaft?

Not to mention all my cameras feel noticably different when advancing without film in them.

Lens caps on rangefinders are my weakness! 😛
 
Almost made that mistake today, went out - was going to take a pic but then realised the film was still in my pocket and hadn't been loaded yet

Still, many a time I have been so worried that an amazing picture I had taken may be ruined by the film lab or the post office may mislay it (I send my film off to be delivered) only to get it back and realise it wasn't such a great pic afterall and might as well have been taken with no film in the camera - at least then it would still have been an amazing pic... in my mind at least! 😎
