I want my Ricoh Back...but which one?!

I owned a GRD once, had it for years, the first one - took it to Nepal, the himalayas, all over, then killed it with sand on a beach in Cornwall :bang:

I bought an olympus pen to replace it. I really like the pen but I've never loved it in the same way as I did the grd - it was like an extension of my hand.

I think because it's just that bit too big and fussy, particularly with the kit lens on the front.

I want another ricoh and can see there's a bang up to date version of the GRD out...my roman numerals are out but is that six?! grd IV, anyhoo...I can also see they are on the cusp of releasing the 'ricoh gr' http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417599,00.asp

what's this, have we come full circle? what are the key differences between that and the preceding model?

It seems to be a collaboration with pentax - now I thought the thing that made the GRs special were the ricoh lenses?

I'm drawn to say the new GR.
Seems to be a vast improvement over previous GRD's and as such just let's you get on with the business of photographing, something I think Ricoh GRDs have over every digital I've come across.

The new Ricoh GR drops the version number, it just 'GR' on the camera. If you want one it will be about a 3 week wait. You can place a pre-order at some shops.

The new one has a bigger sensor... much bigger. APS-C vs. typical P&S size sensor from a few years ago. It does not seem to have been sullied by Pentax in any form. 😉 It is supposedly the same Ricoh quality and lens.

If you can afford it, this is the model to get. If you can't, now's a great time to buy the previous version the GRD IV. If you look around, you'll find it being sold for a lot less than it was going for a few months ago.

A few basic distinctions--
GRD III: small sensor, f1.9 max, ISO1600 max, 10meg
GRD IV: small sensor, f1.9 max, ISO3200 max, 10 meg

GRD V (GR): APS sensor, f2.8 max, ISO25600 max, 16meg

Perhaps the most salient question is: How much do big prints matter to you?

This is a good time to buy a III, and soon will be a good time to buy a IV! (Speaking as one with a IV + hanging on to a III...)
