The best camera is one that still works!
This pic is a strange one ... it's digital and it's colour and because I would describe myself as a dedicated black and white film shooter it's out of my zone of preference.
But ... I pre-visualised the shot to the point where I stalked this girl until she was exactly where I wanted her and she and that insanely long necked blue guitar created something special for me.
This was with my M8 on a paid gig at a gallery opening!

I'm surprised that a few people are rating their best photos and aligning them with the amount of flickr views they've had ... is this because acceptence and popularity of their photograph on flickr is important to them ... I'm curious about this?
I've come across photos on that site that get drooled over that have no appeal for me at all!

This has been, for a long time, my favorite overall photo. Took this back in 04 with a Canon Elan 7, 17-40L, and Velvia (can you tell?)... This is on the trail to Hiji Falls, in northern Okinawa.
This is my favorite concert shot. Mono, in Seoul. Canon 5D and Nikkor 105mm/1.8.
My favorite journalism shot. On the C130 coming to Iraq. D700, 35mm f2.0.... some crazy ISO.

Really, all of these are good--but already there are a few of you who have a different idea of what's your best than I do, having looked at your stuff over the past year and a half. I didn't give this much thought when picking mine, but I think what we think is our best often has more to do with what we want to think of ourselves than how other people see us.

It's all in the eye of the beholder, and there is no acccounting for what stirs people. Hell, if you could figure that out, you could sell the secret to other photographers and never have to work again.
I've posted many shots that I thought were wonderful only to have them either poorly received, or get no comments at all, while others that I thought were just okay were praised to the skies.
Flickr? Not exactly a hotbed of discerning photo commentary anyway.

Love this shot. Can be interpreted in many ways. Mine is that I can almost imagine the painting to be an enlarged mirror rendition of the women standing there, and that she too sees that. I don’t have a best because I don’t have a way of ranking them, no way to define best, my daughter in a bikini seems to be the best in Flickr’s frame on reference

I don't have a favourite. I like some more than others but once they're taken I tend to want to improve, to keep searching for something 'better' or something that really grabs me.
On the issue of what others think in terms of rating your own pictures, it's interesting to gather viewpoints and opinions ( especially from those peers you respect and admire ) but I find it misleading. People may or may not like some or all of my pictures but they see them with different eyes and a different viewpoint to me. Once a picture is taken it takes on a life of it's own; left to find it's own way in the world, to be liked or disliked and judged on it's merits via the view and opinion of those who come into contact with it. More pretentious than I anticipated it sounding but hopefully you understand what I mean.
