Good thread this. Very interesting to see peoples shots that they consider 'sets the standard'

I'm surprised that a few people are rating their best photos and aligning them with the amount of flickr views they've had ... is this because acceptence and popularity of their photograph on flickr is important to them ... I'm curious about this?

I've come across photos on that site that get drooled over that have no appeal for me at all!

Well Keith. In my case I agree with Flickr.
My most popular shot is the one I consider my best to-date. The second shot is one I like very much for other reasons such as sentimentality and not just composition, exposure etc.
I like the statistical nature of the Flickr ratings/feedback as they can force to you re-evaluate shots you may have dismissed initially.

You must remember that many of us are not in a position to have lots of interested friends whose judgement we trust with whom we can regularly critique images with.
RFF is good and full of well meaning souls, but I would often prefer to look at the flickr stats and then make up my own mind if I think the image is good or not, as oppose to receiving opinions from people I largely know nothing about, so cannot place a value on.

Fortunately for me my account has very little content that could skew the stats, such as gear or naked ladies, despite my best efforts. ;)

I don’t have a best because I don’t have a way of ranking them, no way to define best, my daughter in a bikini seems to be the best in Flickr’s frame on reference

I’ve always thought rateing photos in some “photo competition” was an odd concept, a bit like judging paintings by price

C'mon Stewart! You must have a favourite beer, food, film etc. Or do you like everything equally?
Surely you must have taken some shots that have spurred you on to keep taking more?
You'll be telling me you can't choose between film or digital next. :D

It does'nt take much to make us Yorkshiremen happy! :D

I like these photos best because they remind me of when I first started taking pictures regularly. It's exciting to get results you like, expected or unexpected.

Ha ha! In my experience Yorkshiremen are never bloody 'appy! :D

That was so funny I smirked a bit :)

I have stuff I like but it’s shifting sand they change all the time, the BEST is imposible to define, it’s like asking which is my best lens or best camera … the answae is "it depends"

Not really. I am happy when people like my photographs, but some pictures that I like but are nothing special are being drooled over. Others I might adore but remain ignored. Recently I posted a concert shot I made with a very old lens I bought for next to nothing. Roger Hicks complimented me on the shot, that's worth more to me than 100.000 Flicker hits :)

A pretty girl in a very mediocre shot is guaranteed to draw many views though.
