I have been watching here some members who gets many comments but never shows any sign of appreciation by saying "thanks". It is really nice to see people who gets comments and appreciate them by thanking. Am I wrong?
I wonder why some never shows appreciation

I always try to stay in touch with what I post, and usually subscribe to the thread when I post a question, but I am a chaotic guy so let me say it here: If I ever forgot, I'm sorry, and I do appreciate it!

Depends on the comments. There are usually a bunch of comments on each thread that deserve no thanks.. 🙂

In the gallery?
I've only posted three or four shots there since I joined and would like to think if I had someone kind enough to comment or leave constructive feedback on one of my pics that I'd say "thanks." The trouble for me, and perhaps for others, is that I'm rarely able to get onto RFF so it may be that weeks go by before I'm able to look up what may, or probably may not, have been left for me comments wise. The same is true for the threads though.

Well, I meant comments in the gallery. Everyone who takes comment should pay it back in some way, either by thanking or writing a counter comment to this person for her/his picture...

there are other sites better designed for back patting and returning favor. Flickr, FB...

Personal opinion here; a thank you may be nice but I don't believe in "tit for tat" thank yous' or positive comments being left just because that person left one for you. We would end up like Flickr which is for comment collectors more than photographers.
PS. This comes from a very poor photographer whose unl;ikely to get much interest in their pics anyway, a good photographer would have to spend each visit to RFF just replying to comments the whole time

If I leave a nice comment for someone, I expect no response back.
I would never want someone to feel obligated to make a return comment. Maybe they don't like my photos. I wouldn't want them to pretend otherwise.
So I pretty much do the same when I receive a comment. However, if the person asks a question about a photo, I always try to answer it.
When you post a photo, you do have the option of being notified when someone posts a comment. It's one of the check boxes on the upload screen.

If I leave a comment it is done because someone has done something great with a camera...I normally don't come back looking for a "Thank you"...if I do check on the thread/photo it's to see if anyone else found this to be something great too...

Filling up threads with a 'thank-you' rather diminishes and dilutes the impact of the thread. However if questions are asked, if contoversial observations are made, then some sort of comment and reply can enrich that thread.
For a 'thank-you' a pm seems to be an appropriate response.
That is my take on the situation.
But the forum is made up of a variety of people, of different ages, different backgrounds, different cultures, and diiferent expectations as a result. Responding to a thread coment is a very personal affair dictated by the poster's past experiences, present mood and circumstances.
What a great form we have as a result - thank you Chief Bar-tender and all the Moderators.

I understand the situation. But if one sends a picture into the gallery the sender may naturally expect a feedback, otherwise the sender should better close his own gallery into the feedback. I used to write comments on many more gallery postings than I do now. Coming to see it as pretentious, I decided that, in most cases, clicking an image as a favorite still lets the poster know I appreciate his or her work without me having to share my verbose hot air.

What bugs me in threads are replays containing one or more large sized pictures with "I like this picture!" under. I imagine referencing post by number or giving shortcut to it or by posters name+picture number would be enough, author and other interested parties could sort out which picture is subject of interest or emotions.
I like to see comments on gallery pics, especially if there's something more than "I like it" being said. I'm not sure how to interpret the number of views; maybe the thumbnail reveals something great, or maybe it's unclear and clicked out of curiosity.
In threads, again I prefer to see something more than "I like it". Quoting pics can be good so as to show what pic you're talking about, especially when there are some other posts distancing the quote from the original. When the quote closely follows the original, then showing the pic is unnecessary IMO, and the pic could be deleted from the quote to save space. In any case, quoting only the pic you're actually commenting on (if there were several strung together) keeps it clear and clean.
